Today, we acknowledge Ellen Bruton as an excellent Woman of Waste. Her coworker said, "She works in Bowie, Texas, and holds the yard together. I believe she deserves some spotlight for all her great work!" Thank you for being a shining example of a team player. We admire your hard work and dedication!

🌻 Find Your Spark: Grow it. Share it. Feel more Happiness, Joy, Contentment. Be a better You for those you lead, and those you love. 🌻
#DobInAMateWhoDoesSomethingGreat ! I’d like to dob in Robyn Westgate and Sheldon Smith. You both have been wonderful MATEs to me; helping, supporting, encouraging and building me up at every opportunity. Your genuine care and authenticity entirely match the content you teach. You truly walk your talk. It’s an absolute honour and pleasure to work with you and to call you friends 🌻! A bit of background: The MATE Bystander Program is a fantastic framework that supports the eradication of gendered violence, through research-backed and highly practical information. The framework is an easy-to-remember, simple way of identifying ways in which we can address inappropriate behaviours etc, while keeping ourselves safe in the process. There’s so so many things we can do … it’s not only about ‘Calling it out’ (although this certainly has its place!). This initiative is wonderful because effecting change in this space is about inviting people INTO the conversation, not shutting anyone out or denigrating them. And so by dobbing in our ‘MATES who do something great’, we are celebrating the actions that will counteract this huge problem in Australia; we’re keeping the conversation real and constructive; and we’re appreciating people and making them feel good! And who doesn’t want that? Find the sparkly moments and people in your day today all; appreciate them; and be well 😉 -Jules 🌻x
2024 saw the inaugural MAY8 day where we asked you to 'dob in a mate for doing something great" We say, not just May8 - how about we dob in a mate for doing something great every time they do! Let us start by dobbing in Sheldon Smith who after a Mate Bystander Curtin chat with folks from Environmental Consultants Association (WA) made a point of walking colleague Robyn Westgate to the back to her vehicle in what was by this time of night an almost empty, dim, dark multi level parking space. Kudos to Sheldon for realising some women could feel intimidated and anxious having to venture into such a place at night on their own and for being a MATE (Robyn then dropped Sheldon off at his vehicle!) South-western Victoria’s Gunditjmara people had to prove a “special interest” in their own Country in a High Court ‘land’ case against Alcoa of Australia. They won. Although Australia’s systems of law and policy still requires First Nations – who have been here for 65,000 years – to go to Court to prove a special interest in land or sea, this case and others should offer pause to offshore wind proponents and investors aiming to reduce project risk. For First Nations people, Sea Country is inseparable from terrestrial Country. Just as the courts found with land, marine areas have been owned and cared for by First Nations for millenia through complex systems of responsibilities and management of rights including ownership, use, and exclusion of others. As described in evidence by one Traditional Owner, “The earth and the sea, the water is not empty.” There is an ongoing relationship with both that ethically, and legally, should not be ignored. Australia’s failure to recognise this has resulted in First Nations’ relationships with Sea Country being made “invisible” to-date. Perpetuating the myth of terra nullius in Australia’s offshore areas could prove costly. Early engagement, transparent information, enabling free prior and informed consent, building trusting relationships leading to partnerships, benefit-sharing, and equity and ownership including a seat at the table can reduce delay in Australia’s offshore clean energy transition.
'We went and camped there and got death threats and everything...my two children were with me...we lived out there.' Aunty Tina Frankland shares the importance of her successful protest against the Alcoa Smelter Site in Portland. Together with Aunty Sandy Onus, Aunty Tina's activism led to one of the most significant land rights cases in Victoria's history. #Alcoa #Portland #FirstPeople

Amazing how now people start to wake up to the truth! I’ve never been a fan of Candace Owens, she’s way too conservative for me , however, the fact that she spoke the truth knowing that she’d be fired deserved my respect! She out morals and values first! #humanityfirst #ceasefire #freedomforpalestine

“Black land ownership in the U.S. has dwindled to critically low numbers. In 1910, Black farmers owned more than 16 million acres of agricultural land (about 14%). Today, a staggering 90% of that land is no longer in Black hands. That amounts to an estimated loss of $326 billion denied to generations of Black Americans — a significant contributor to the U.S. racial wealth gap.” #blackfarmers #economicinclusion #ownership #generationalwealth
Register for this important film screening and conversation (hybrid) on 11/29, about the theft and recovery of Black land, $300+ billion stolen from Black people over the past century. This is another case of Reparations. My former grad student Andrew Kahrl will be moderating along with director Eternal Polk and Black farmer activist P. J. Haynie.
