Peatlands are wetland ecosystems where waterlogged conditions capture plant material and keep it from fully decomposing. Peatland destruction causes the loss of carbon and takes away future carbon absorbing capacity. WCS Canada uses GIS to measure peatland cover and carbon storage, record the lands’ protected status and risks from development, inform fieldwork, and prioritize conservation efforts. 🌊 The Everglades is an essential ecosystem in South Florida, providing a freshwater supply for millions of people. 🌳 The restoration of this vital waterway is a priority for ensuring the sustainability of the area's ecosystems and the long-term health of the region's residents. 🤝 That's why we're partnering with experts to restore the Everglades and ensure South Florida's freshwater supply. 🌎 We're working on projects such as improving water flows throughout the river and its tributaries, restoring natural habitats, and controlling invasive species. 🧪 We're also conducting research to understand the impact of climate change on the Everglades and the region's freshwater supply. 💪 Together, we can protect and preserve the Everglades for generations to come. #EvergladesRestoration #FreshwaterSupply #SouthFlorida

High Country News makes a strong case for wetlands. They aren't getting the reputation they warrant as a star carbon capturer among the treasure trove of ecosystem services Earth provides. The article speaks to the need to map, measure, and conserve the wetlands we still have and we've underestimated their presence and their role in ensuring a resilient future. Paraphrased, the action needed will be a part of the toolkit we need to maintain resilience to climate change, have clean water, feed ourselves, and stay safe from flooding. I agree that we must do better in wetland conservation efforts. https://lnkd.in/gK6KX4tP

A second year of work has wrapped up for the Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia—an ambitious endeavor aimed at reclaiming lost ground and restoring the marsh to its former footprint in an innovative and sustainable way while, among other goals, combating sea-level rise and coastal biodiversity loss. The benefits of marsh restoration extend far beyond ecological renewal, and includes coastal flood protection. A healthy marsh serves as a natural buffer against coastal erosion and flooding, safeguarding nearby communities and infrastructure. By enhancing the resilience of the marsh ecosystem, the project contributes to the overall resilience of coastal areas. #TheNatureForce #NatureBasedSolutions #FloodMitigation #CoastalFloodProtection #SeaLevelRise #CoastalErosion #ClimateResilience

In Washington State, there's an ongoing effort to protect the Duwamish River and its native fish populations as climate change threatens their existence. ✅ Over the years, populations of native Chinook salmon and steelhead have declined drastically. Recent studies have pinpointed a significant threat to these federally protected species: an increase in extreme heat due to the removal of native trees along the riverbanks, in addition to pollution and urban development. ✅ To tackle this problem, the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe created solar aspect shade maps. These maps show the areas where shade is essential to lower high water temperatures in the river. Click the link to see how communities are banding together to protect their cherished waterways and the species they depend on! ⬇ https://lnkd.in/gjnVVbEH #UrbanWaters #RiverRestoration #EnvironmentalJustice #ExtremeHeat
