The risk of ‘illuquid investments’ is not measured only by volatility of valuation marks. It is an unregulated market and agency risks as well as risks due to the long duration are huge and mostly go unmeasured. So this is at best a dishonest representation of a risk return profile for private markets vs public markets. What do you think?

Preqin is acquired by BlackRock Rumors are S&P, Bloomberg, LSEG and a handful of PE buyers were all bidders $3.2B was the purchase price. $240m is the expected revenue this year. BlackRock sees the Preqin data and products as a natural fit and extension of their Aladdin product. The value of data continues to be recognized by the strongest companies. Another great acquisition of a unique data asset. We had Tegus acquired a few weeks ago by AlphaSense and now Preqin by BlackRock. The good news is these types of deals will wake up other sleeping giants and get the M&A liquidity back into the private markets. I am excited to see which assets get scooped up next.

Goldman Sachs (GS) recently celebrated 25 Years of being a Publicly Listed Company. Since, the company has initiated a couple of big moves to be sure they are advancing on the investment front. Recently appointed board member of Hess Corporation, John B. Hess (CEO of Hess), has joined the company. GS has also raised a whopping $3.4B for their Vintage Real Estate Fund III. This comes after the announcement of adding the Asia Pacific to their target geographic plan worth up to a record fundraising number of $7B in Real Estate Credits. PRIVATE EQUITY: DOUBLE THE RETURN WITH HALF THE RISK?   Why private markets? That is the question Blackstone answers on its home page (1). To answer that question, the world’s largest private equity manager uses an illustration (2) which shows that private equity has double the return of global stocks, with half the risk.   This is the message that Blackstone tells its customers, who include the world’s largest investors, pension funds, municipalities, endowments, wealthy clients and increasingly the man in the street.   Is Blackstone’s illustration (see figure below) representative of the risk-return characteristics of private equity and listed stocks?
