The other day, someone inquired about my constant companion, the spike maul. I explained its crucial role in guaranteeing safety and efficiency as a dedicated track inspector. Subsequently, the individual thanked me, admitting they hadn't grasped its significance before. Now armed with a maul, he / him recently uncovered a safety issue they had missed previously. I replied, "You're welcome, my railroad young friend!" Collaboration and best practice are the cornerstones of progress in the light rail sector. During a recent workshop, engineers across the UK network discussed track welding improvements. Led by the Light Rail Engineering Group's Chair, Marilena Papadopoulou, the workshop included updates from the networks, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), the Light Rail Safety & Standards Board, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and a presentation by Chris McKeown. By adopting best practice across the sector, welding failures in embedded grooved track can be avoided, reducing the risk of costly repairs and service disruption. Phillip Terry MSc MIET, UKTram Lead Engineer, explained: “Correctly, and to standard, welded grooved track is essential for the safe and efficient running of any light rail network. ''The meeting provided an ideal opportunity for sector professionals and industry leads to share best practice and discuss guidance. ''This is especially important where procurement occurs outside the operator or maintainer remit.” Properly welded grooved tracks are vital for safety and efficiency. This kind of knowledge-sharing ensures that our tramways remain safe and reliable for all passengers. This time, we're diving into the world of Engineering Supervisors, a role that deserves not just recognition but a standing ovation. An Engineering Supervisor isn't just a title; they are the rule book of the railway, the guiding hand that ensures everything operates like a well-oiled machine. From setting up a work site to sending teams to isolate the traction current to handing it back to the PICOP, Engineering Supervisors are the backbone of safety and efficiency. They're responsible for issuing permits, briefing COSSs, and making sure all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed. But that's not all. They also take charge of the plant and equipment, which might include track-mounted vehicles or MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms). It's their duty to ensure that everyone is in the right place at the right time and, most importantly, that they're doing it safely. In the world of railways, where precision and safety are paramount, the role of an Engineering Supervisor is far from easy. It's a challenging and crucial position that keeps our railways on track.
