2023 was an interesting year to say the least. A year filled in unexpected challenges, innovative technologies, creative resilience, and valuable lessons. As someone who perpetually crosses off her to-do list and moves onto the next thing, I encourage you to look back and reflect on your accomplishments. For me those looked like: 🔥 Hosted 21 thought leadership campfires with #EB & #TA leaders around the world. 🌱 Started planting the seeds of my personal brand on LinkedIn, sharing 61 posts throughout the year that equated to +426% engagement and +294% impressions YoY. 📈 My top performing posts were on topics that bring me joy like #employerbrand, #evp, #storytelling, and #employeeengagement. 💗 Created and shared some incredible employee stories of triumph, growth, joy and opportunities. 🌎 Met, danced, laughed and sang in-person with colleagues and clients in California, Tennessee, Colorado and New York. And connected virtually with SO many thought leaders who shared their expertise, asked hard questions and bonded over mutual challenges. How often do you look into your insecurities? How often do you run from them? With Wavemakers, you can confront them. I’m learning how to do this from Week 2 of the Wavemakers Leadership program. Our critical voice nags us, telling us why we cannot move forward and insisting we are not enough. We believe it because it's our own voice. The hard part is shining a spotlight on this critique and saying STOP. Then asking WHY? What evidence supports these thoughts? What lies beneath these fears, trying to protect you? How can you acknowledge the values behind those fears? These questions are tough and take time to reframe into valuable assets. It's hard to be honest when the world craves success markers. However, these benchmarks do not prove self-awareness or understanding of others' needs. A growth mindset can be measured by self-love, illuminating insecurities, and reframing them for personal gain. I am a work in progress. A recent graduate seeking a job in a new country. It's easy to doubt the journey ahead and feel inadequate in a competitive job market. However, this mindset comes from my inner critique. It’s a limiting belief hindering my growth and preventing me from being my authentic self. As I continue this journey of self-growth and reflection, I have a supportive community affirming the struggles and rewards of delving into the difficult parts of ourselves to find hidden gems inside. Rather than treading water, I am emerging beyond instability with Wavemakers as my support network, showing we are not alone and that the ocean can be a phenomenon of multi-potentiality. If you run from your fears, you will never see the hidden wonders beneath the surface. Reflecting on 2023 as the year comes to a close, it's a blend of gratitude and resilience. The journey began with a challenging chapter – a car accident in March that left me hesitant to get behind the wheel again. Nights were tough, filled with nightmares, tears and a sense of hopelessness. My incredible colleagues, especially the wonderful women in our team, became more than coworkers; they became a vital support system, turning our workplace into a haven of understanding and empathy. Thanks Mashadi Letwaba for your leadership. The year unfolded unexpectedly, with leadership roles in projects I once thought were beyond my reach. Witnessing significant growth in client projects and EVP programmes added a layer of accomplishment to the journey. Balancing studies, work and navigating the complexities of being there for my teenager sister presented formidable challenges. Gratitude fills me for the insightful leadership sessions I had with Romy Heldsinger propelling my career to new heights. Beyond the professional landscape, 2023 brought meaningful connections and most importantly, a spiritual connection with myself – a calming force in the chaos. The phrase ‘Fake it until you make it’ carries a lot of negative connections. It implies that we should adopt someone else’s person and become disconnected from our true selves' emotions. When how we feel doesn’t align with who we want to become, ‘faking it’ will only cause more discomfort and even less confidence in who we are right now. To boost your confidence and overcome insecurities, try these three practices to shift your perspective: Practice Self-Love. You are the greatest love of your life! When you have self-love in your heart you stop comparing yourself to others. Treat yourself with kindness especially when you make a mistake. Complimenting yourself every day. Reframe Limiting Belifes. Limiting beliefs are stories we were told by others, or were developed due to comparison with others. They are not your story. Whenever a negative thought about yourself comes up, ask yourself if it’s true, and if you can find evidence to contradict those beliefs. Take Credit For Your Achievements. We are used to celebrating and paying attention only to the big achievements. We fail to recognize that it was the small steps that led us to those big goals.
