It's better to be distinctive than different. To be distinctive, is to be uniquely different. It's to be different in a way that only applies to you. You can listen to half a second of any song from any of their albums and it's clear you're hearing a Nirvana song. So, when thinking of how to set yourself apart, don't just think of being different. Last year our busiest day was our Cider Festival. This year we wanted to go bigger…. The result was bigger than even my wildest dreams. Last year we sold 372 pints of cider and I was still pushing cider I had bought for the cider fest at Xmas! Last year our marketing really pushed us having “20 different ciders” but the feedback was that our guests loved the live music part instead. This year we retained the “Cider Fest” name but increased the name value of the acts performing whilst also spreading them out a bit better with the ciders more of a tagline than the main draw. We booked the acts and started the marketing campaign at Easter! Spreading the word locally and through the acts booked we had nearly 2,000 people interested in the event on FB Events. However I’ve also been stung with this before interested doesn’t always bring visits. So was it a success…. - Over 400 pints of cider sold before 2pm (over 1,000 all day - nearly triple last year) Not including other drinks. - All bag in box ciders sold before 4pm - won’t be still pushing it at Xmas! - The garden was packed all day - every bench taken. I had purchased an additional five earlier than week but we also had 70 chairs in our function room as you can see spread out. Some neighbours brought deck chairs whilst other people brought picnic blankets! - Overall turnover was THREE times more than the year before. In fact it was nearly as much as our highest grossing week from just one day! - Feedback has been positive but we’ve also had to take some on the chin - long queues at the bar. Running out of BIB ciders so early in the event! So what do we do next year…. Double down - spread across the weekend rather than a one day event OR just tweek things to try and increase turnover? Who fancies coming along next year?

I don't know if he's a farrier or a singer in real life but he does both well. https://lnkd.in/gSeFiNrA In Australia, they are considering "right to disconnect" legislation meaning employees can ignore requests from their employer over the weekend. I do text or email my team over the weekend occasionally but try to limit it to "the sky is falling" events which very seldom happen. When I write emails, I try to remember to delay delivery until Monday morning. It seems crazy we need legislation to do the right thing for our team. Super Bowl ads are sometimes great and sometimes not great. My faves were Dunkin', Reese's Big Cup, BMW Manufacturing Co., LLC/talk like Walken, Verison, and Uber Eats. Of course, the Budweiser Brewing Company APAC and Kia AutoSport commercials were emotional winners. What were your favorite commercials from the big game. I have to admit, the vitriol shared by some about Taylor Swift cracks me up. She is a world famous superstar. Whether you like or dislike her for whatever reason, she's a big deal and big deals catch the media's attention. I'm pretty sure the National Football League (NFL) isn't too bummed about the attention it brings their sport. I've tagged a lot of companies today. The Business of Carnival. During the reign of the Merry Monarch (Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago), there is the opportunity for phenomenal #businessexcellence. For the first time in over a decade, I participated in J'ouvert celebrations. For our non-Caribbean counterparts, J'ouvert is part of T&T Carnival. It occurs in the pre-dawn hours of Carnival Monday. In summary, it is a street parade & throngs of people pay to join J'ouvert bands. There are assigned music trucks (that play Calypso/Soca/Chutney music). At times, there is also a truck that serves drinks to your band, there is security etc. Many of these bands use various products (black oil, safe body paint, powders, chocolate sauce or mud), to smear on their members. Any observers (non participants) are usually at risk of getting smeared as well. J'ouvert also mainly celebrates our traditional "Ole Mas" as well. Now, onto my core points. Having been a band member this year, there are a few general observations from a business perspective I wish to share: 1. The sign-up process for band membership should be efficient & seamless. Every aspect of that experience should be stress free. From payment, to collection of your goody bag pre-J'ouvert, to ensuring participants clearly understand the rules of engagement (via a written agreement) are all essential. 2. Punctuality. If there is an agreed rendezvous time, J'ouvert bands should do their best to ensure there is not much deviation from that. A bit of a delay is understandable as band members trickle in, but a start time that commences almost 2 hours after the previously advertised kick off, is not okay. 3. Provision of Security, food & drinks should be optimum. Patrons have a right to feel safe while in the band & food/drinks need to be supplied easily & hygienically. 4. The Music..... Listen.... 😐 THIS is the anchor point of a J'ouvert band experience. If the music truck has issues with its sound systems/ engineering (feedback, too much base, too loud etc), & if the selection/flow of songs is subpar/ disconnected, it can seriously deplete the experience overall. This NEEDS to be a priority for band leaders 😐 *hint hint*. 5. Dear Disc Jockey/DJ/MC.... your job on a Music Truck is to engage and hype up the band members...Occasionally. It is NOT to pretend you have a Netflix special & interrupt EVERY song, give rambling speeches or just experience fascination over hearing your own voice boom through the speakers. Focus. 6. Welfare provisions. Some J'ouvert bands provide washroom facilities on a separate truck for patrons. This is usually deeply appreciated. Ensuring those facilities are kept up to an acceptable standard for the duration of the event & amenities such as toilet paper, running water etc is available is key. A great story about how important it is to remember the details. The Italian Market (many non-Philadelphians may remember the market from Rocky's famous run in the 1976 classic that ended up on the art museum steps). The market is the nation's oldest continuous operating market and stretches for several blocks on 9th Street in Philadelphia and is a hallmark of Philadelphia's Italian heritage" The annual festival stretches for 7 blocks and features 100's of vendors, music, parades, a hoagie competition, and a halfball tournament. However, the highlight is a competition to see who can ascent a 30 ft high pole greased with lard to claim prizes of meats, cheese, gift cards, and money that are tied to the top of the pole. It is also great practice for those fans eager to train on climbing streetlight poles when the Phillies or Eagles win championships (we don't get too much opportunity to practice here in Philadelphia - lol). It seems, this year, that someone forgot to arrange the crane that is used to remove the unclaimed meats and cheeses after the event. For 4 weeks, the "world's worst wind chime" has baked in the summer sun in the city leaking oils and unleashing stench on the innocent shoppers below. I think this is a great example - from a management standpoint - that no matter how great the idea is, no matter how flawlessly it is executed at the moment of truth, true success is measured in the details and the follow-up after the idea. https://lnkd.in/evmgEpc3
