Doug Parker’s Post

Former Chairman and CEO at American Airlines

This morning I attended the funeral of my friend, Colleen Barrett. It was a beautiful ceremony for an incredible woman. I met Colleen many years ago through the great Herb Kelleher. Much of her time was spent keeping the brilliant, but easily distracted, Kelleher on task. One of my favorite Herb/Colleen stories: as a meeting runs long and Herb launches into yet another story, Colleen rises from the table and brings Herb his jacket. Herb looks at her and asks, “Am I cold or are we leaving?” But Colleen was much much more than Herb’s task master. She was the heart of Southwest Airlines — passionately caring for the people of Southwest and building and protecting its unique culture. As longtime Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said today, “Southwest would not be Southwest without Colleen Barrett.” The airline business is intensely competitive and that can often lead to a healthy disdain for those running other airlines. But there are a select few that are so impressive, so unique, and so transformative that you can’t help but admire and study them in hopes of learning how to be a better leader yourself. Colleen Barrett was one of those select few. She is an industry legend whose legacy lives on through the people she loved at Southwest, and the lessons she taught them — and all of us. Way to go, Colleen! You did it right. Rest in a loving peace.

Colleen was not only an industry legend. There were legions of women like me that did not even know her well but still recognized that she was someone special, with qualities we would do well to emulate in our own careers and relationships. She leaves an impressive legacy and many admirers. May she rest in peace.

Thank you! Collen was and still is our light that keeps us shining for our customers. I actually feel sad for newer people at both SWA & in the aviation industry that will never have the privilege of knowing her! RIP Queen of Hearts
