OMG this #InternationalWomensDay can we quit with the breakfasts, lunches, self-congratulatory posts on social media and instead talk about the fact we will never achieve parity, equality or equity as long as women are attacked and killed by men. Samantha Murphy was just going for a jog FFS. So many women have already been attacked and killed this year and it’s only 8 March. Women are half the population. Would we have brunches, lunches and afternoon teas for men? No. Even when we move away from cupcakes and organise panel events featuring thoughtful and intelligent women talking about supporting and mentoring, we are totally missing the point. We have not achieved much at all if we are still stalked, harassed, assaulted, attacked, raped and killed. Can we change the narrative around 8 March? These issues are fundamental and they are just being glossed over with corporate lunches and selfies. Stop patronising us. Why are women buying into this nonsense? We all need to stand up to violence against women. Corporate lunches and self-congratulatory posts just don’t cut it anymore. Let’s get real. While this is not necessarily a point of view shared by many on LinkedIn…please take time to think about this issue.
