Yet, only 33% complete lower secondary education, highlighting the urgent need for vocational training and education. Investing in our youth can turn challenges into opportunities, creating a more inclusive and prosperous future for all! Lack of foundational skills development among young learners living in rural communities poses an enormous threat to the future of education in Africa, which, in the long run, also affects Africa’s future economic growth and social development! During one of AREAi’s most recent baseline assessments conducted among learners in the Karonmajiji Disabled Colonoy IDP camp, we discovered that an alarming number of children are enrolled in school but are not learning anything. They could barely identify single-digit alphabets, which is highly problematic for the future of education for these learners and others like them who are faced with this learning crisis in Africa! There is an urgent need for the government and other educational stakeholders to collaborate and work together to address this learning crisis. Scaling up innovations like AREAi’s #FastTrack is a step in the right direction to improve learning outcomes in rural and disadvantaged communities and refugee camps in Nigeria. SHOMEA in partnership with Amaan Africa will be having a 2 days FREE Digital Skills training on the 12th and 13th of April 2024 at CIBAEEVA Orphange Dschang West region, Cameroon. Teaching orphans graphic design and content creation with Canva is a strategic move that aligns with the broader goal of empowering vulnerable populations in this digital age (SDG4). SHOMEA's partnership with Amaan Africa in the "Digital Bridge and Mentorship for Orphans" project is an exemplary initiative that recognizes the transformative potential of digital literacy. It aims to equip orphans with valuable skills that can open up opportunities in today's technology-driven world, thereby fostering their independence and self-reliance. In the digital era, proficiency in graphic design and content creation is not just about artistic expression; it's about acquiring a set of skills that are increasingly in demand across various sectors. For orphans, learning these skills can be particularly life-changing (SDG1). It offers them a way to tell their stories, express their identities, and communicate with the world on their own terms. Moreover, mastering platforms like Canva, which is user-friendly and accessible, makes it easier for them to showcase their creativity and engage with a global audience. This not only boosts their confidence but also enhances their employability (SDG8)giving them a competitive edge in the job market even if they cannot afford for such trainings due insufficient resources. The project also emphasizes the importance of mentorship, which plays a crucial role in guiding orphans through their learning journey. After the training, we will provide personalized support, delegate a project lead at the orphanage to help navigate the challenges that come with learning something new. They will practice constantly with the computer and internet connection donated by Shomea. We are not just teaching orphans how to use digital tools; they are connecting them with a world of possibilities, empowering them to envision and work towards a brighter future. Some weeks ago, my younger sister came into my room with her face glowing with excitement. She opened up her journal and shared her hopes of using environmental awareness to change the community. Her devotion was evident as she advocated for Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). But in her eyes, there was a flash of doubt.  She then asked, "Big sis, should I start with social media or school campaigns?" This conversation brought home an important fact: Although Africa's youths are full of promise, they frequently lack the right direction to make a difference. Africa has a lot of young potential, but because there aren't enough resources or mentors, it frequently goes undeveloped. This is best shown by the example of my sister, who had an obvious love for the environment but lacked the means to turn it into meaningful action. This is our collective responsibility as a community. Young Africans must be empowered through many strategies such as: Closing the Skills Gap: Giving young people the necessary tools, including soft skills like communication and technical abilities like problem-solving, will enable them to successfully address their areas of interest in career and life generally. Mentoring Is Important: Making connections between young individuals and seasoned professionals encourages information exchange, builds self-esteem, and offers priceless career assistance. Fostering Growth Mindsets: Promoting a "growth mindset" enables young advocates to see obstacles as opportunities for growth, promoting resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.  Amplifying Diverse Voices: Establishing inclusive environments where all viewpoints are acknowledged empowers youth to devise creative solutions for a sustainable future. We can enable Africa's youths to take the lead in their area of interest in the future by making investments in them today. Let's keep the conversation going! Meaningful impact, in our view, is that the long term outcome of youth development efforts should be youth that develop their agency and their skills to access sustainable and decent income generating opportunities, with the ability to build aspirational futures. What does this mean? Meaningful interventions help young people to understand their purpose and become agents of change for themselves, leading to positive and constructive growth. The quality of execution matters: useful, relevant content that is delivered by experienced and talented facilitators is key, and programmes that include various elements (in-depth on-boarding and family involvement; camps or breakaways; journey mapping; mentors, life coaches and/ or check-ins; on-site support) have more effect.
