As a Maternal-Newborn RN and a proud Home Birth Mama x2, I'm thrilled about the Mamas First Act making its way through Congress. This bill could bring Medicaid coverage to doulas and midwives, which is huge for improving birth outcomes —especially for Black mothers facing higher pregnancy-related risks. This move could finally give more mothers the power to choose their care—something that's often out of reach unless you can pay for midwifery care out-of-pocket. I think this is good movement in the right direction. However, I am curious about the assessment of Midwifery & Doula capabilities to handle this potential influxed demand, as well as what this will mean for updated regulations on their practices 🤔 Thoughts? & You can check out this piece from The 19th News with Angela D. Good Morning Nurses, Midwives and Students of the Profession Before you join a Regsitered Trade Union (RTU) i recommend you do some thorough research as some organisations hold themselves out to be a 'Union' but they are not. These businesses do not have the same rights of representation as the ANMF, HSU, AWU or any other RTU in Australia. Pro Choice Union had submitted an application with the Fair Work Commission and QLD Industrial Relations Commision to become a RTU but they have withdrawn the applicaiton with FWC for a number of reasons - see the link to FWC below. The Red Union hub which includes Nurses Professional Association Australia (NPAA) are not yet a RTU. Many Professional Associations include Pii with membership eg ACN but they may not advise or represent you if you have an Industrial matter including the Disciplinary process. Nursing and Midwifery Advocacy Solutons (NAMAS) are not a Union, we do not have Industrial Rights of representation. However, we are here to assist nurses, midwives and students of the Profession resolve workplace conflict including non-compliance of Industrial, Professional or WHS frameworks by offering information, resources, advice, options and ongoing support at a very affordable cost. We want to ensure that NAMAS subscribers seeing Industrial Representation from their Union, Association or Workplace Dispute Lawyer have all the evidence, and information required to proceed. Alternatively as a NAMAS subscriber you might want to know what a particular employer policy or an Award clause means for you, you can send me an email with your query, or call me, as i will assist you understand the intent of the clause, policy or procedure. We can all donate ourselves. But there is more to be done. Convincing others to donate as well! We all meet friends and family members throughout the weeks and days. Knowing how noble a cause The Indus Hospital is, here are two personal strategies that I use for myself to convince my circle on donating to Indus: Personal Stories and Testimonials: I share compelling personal stories and testimonials from patients who have benefited from the hospital's services. Highlighting real-life examples of how the hospital has positively impacted lives can create an emotional connection and a sense of urgency. I use visuals like photos or videos to make the stories more impactful. Transparent Use of Funds: I emphasize the hospital's transparency and efficient use of donations. I provide clear information on how the funds are allocated and the tangible outcomes they achieve. This, I believe, highlights the hospital's track record of financial integrity and successful projects can build trust and motivate potential donors.

There is a lot of conversation about perinatal health disparities and equity, yet there is something we haven’t tried: leveraging the power and potential of midwives to make a difference. Policies are needed to advance midwifery care and ensure: ✅ Equitable Medicaid reimbursement for all credentialed midwives (CPM, CNM) in all settings -hospital, birth center and home. ✅ Birth center licensing and reimbursement that aligns with the requirements of the Affordable Care Act ✅ Doula reimbursement policies must be updated to include birth centers and home birth. First Nations communities experience an unacceptable gap in health outcomes and First Nations babies and their mothers have critically poorer outcomes than non-First Nations people. The Baggarrook Yurrongi culturally inclusive caseload midwifery pilot program began as a collaboration between researchers at La Trobe University, Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) and three major Melbourne metropolitan hospitals. Women in the program reported positive experiences of maternity care during labour, birth and the early postnatal period and felt emotionally and physically supported. Numerous studies have found that midwifery-led continuity of care is associated with substantially better perinatal health outcomes. That's why there is such a demand for the Baggarrook Yurrongi caseload midwifery program. This unique model differs from fragmented mainstream care where First Nations women usually receive care from a number of different and unfamiliar health care providers, and often experience racism. Midwives working in the model were also highly satisfied with the work, valuing building close relationships with women and providing continuity of care in a culturally sensitive way. Today, Presque was one the 63 organizations, who out of deep concern for recent news regarding the changes to the midwifery education program at #UCSF, sent a letter to the University of California Office of the President and University of California, San Francisco Chancellor. UCSF is eliminating the Midwifery Masters degree and requiring all future nurse-midwifery students to graduate with a clinical doctorate. In doing so, the University is dismantling a nationally recognized midwifery education program – one of only two programs in the state – all while the state and policymakers have been working nonstop to scale up maternity and reproductive health services. Making matters worse, because every midwifery faculty member at UCSF is master’s prepared, the University is effectively and unconscionably severing its relationship with current faculty, losing decades of experience and collective knowledge.
