National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day and Webinar – September 18th   National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAD) is observed each year on September 18th to focus on the increasing number of people living long, full lives with HIV. The Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS (HOPWA) program has seen an increase in recent years of the HOPWA eligible individuals aged 51 and older. The most recent program year’s data in 2021 shows 46% of HOPWA eligible individuals were aged 51 and older. This is up from 45% in 2020, 43% in 2019, and 42% in 2018.    HUD’s Office of HIV/AIDS Housing (OHH), that administers the HOPWA program, is sponsoring a webinar series focused on HIV and Aging. This webinar series focuses on community resources available and/or targeted to aging people with HIV, effective strategies and supports to prevent and address feelings of social isolation and loneliness among people aging with HIV, and frailty and mobility challenges for people aging with HIV.   The fifth session in its webinar series focused on HIV and Aging titled, At the Intersection of HIV, Aging & Housing: Exploring the Data & Engaging in Discussions, will take place on Monday, September 18, 2023 from 12-1:30pm (EST). This webinar will spotlight the evolving needs of the aging community, emphasize the criticality of the "Health and Housing" nexus, and showcase ways to address these intersectional challenges optimally. Praise the LORD JESUS! The 6th and last article from my PhD work is published on SAGE Open Medicine! "Mapping evidence on barriers to and facilitators of diagnosing noncommunicable diseases among people living with human immunodeficiency virus in low- and middle-income countries in Africa: A scoping review" mapping evidences on COM-B/TDF 9(Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior model and Theoretical Domains Framework). Barriers and facilitators were identified individual, HCP and Health system related. The most cited barriers include a lack of integrated HIV and noncommunicable disease care, equipment and logistics chain challenges for noncommunicable diseases, patients’ and healthcare providers’ lack of knowledge and awareness of noncommunicable diseases, and healthcare provider’s skill and competency deficiencies. Addressing these issues is crucial for improving patient outcomes and reducing the burden on healthcare providers and health systems. Thanks for reading! Themed “#PutPeopleFirst!” Here are some #AIDS24 takeaways our director shared with us: -Health equity should be a government policy in every country, echoed by speaker AMFAR Greg Millett: “Until we integrate health equity in government policies, we are not going to be successful in ending any public health epidemic.” -Long-acting injectables, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (LAI-prep) and DoxyPrEP, are prevention advancements. Still, we must do better to ensure everyone has access. Again, this emphasizes the need for health equity policies worldwide. -As AIDS is now four decades old, with 40 million infected and one new case every minute, it is an issue for the aging experiencing multiple comorbidities. We must expand our measure of HIV treatment success beyond viral suppression but also through quality of life measurements, as echoed by speaker and scholar Dr. Reena Rajasuriar - University of Malaya (Malaysia). -In the end, let’s not forget who we are advocating for and doing this work for—“This is about people!”—Alicia Kruger, trans activist, Brazil Ministry of Health.

Highlights: WHO at #AIDS2024 The World Health Organization will participate in AIDS 2024, the 25th International AIDS Conference, which will take place in Munich, Germany and virtually from 20-26 July. At a series of pre-conference sessions and WHO-led satellite events, the Organization will share its latest epidemiological, scientific and normative work, and discuss findings from its latest progress report on the implementation of the Global Health Sector Strategies on HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), 2022-2030, highlighting that these epidemics continue to pose significant public health challenges, causing 2.5 million deaths annually. Progress across disease areas is varied, underscoring the need for increased political will and commitment to accelerate efforts.
