When I was more intentional in building a professional network, I volunteered to help out at a #networking event hosted by an industry body. As a volunteer, my responsibilities were mostly around the event registration booth: 🔹Preparing name tags for event speakers and attendees 🔹Marking guests' attendance 🔹Ushering guests into the venue hall to find their designated seats etc. It was a good way of pre-networking with the event organizing team, and the VIPs too; right before the event began. --- I kept helping out for a couple more events hosted by the same organization, for the rest of that year. In the process, I got more comfortable with my networking style too! 😉 --- And then an opportunity came up for me to join one of their sub-committees as a Co-Chair! I took the opportunity. Because I was ready to take on more planning and execution responsibilities; and share my networking tips with others. --- 💡 If you ever want to be involved in a professional capacity outside of your current school/organization, I strongly encourage you to start with #volunteering. 🫶🏻 You can always work your way in, and up. 🎢

Associations play a vital role in fostering connections and promoting collaboration among companies and organizations, and common events can create opportunities for members to interact, share ideas and build stronger relationships. I was just talking with my colleague about challenge of scheduling meetings for volunteer organizations. Please weigh in and tell me whether you think it's better to have regular meetings that are always at the same time and the same day, no matter who can attend or if you should be flexible about availability. In either case, someone who may not be able to attend can now watch a recorded session but when do you cancel the meeting or move the time based on who will be available? How do you determine when the contributions of live meetings are lost because of low attendance?

Cathy Paper, M.A. offers great tips on an often overlooked opportunity for networking: volunteering. I especially value this part... "Volunteering isn't charity; it's a strategic business move. You immerse yourself in the community you're serving, gaining invaluable insights into its challenges and needs. These insights inform your networking strategies and help you position yourself more effectively in the market." Open-minded, empowering service that aims to understand and work alongside the community members can lead to growth for everyone involved. Whether the insights spark innovation in the way we work, lead us to new people to collaborate with, or broaden our horizons and humanity, we gain as much as we give when we immerse ourselves in community. Earlier this week, I had the great pleasure of working with a group of dedicated community leaders. Our topic of discussion was around volunteerism, focusing on what organizations can do to attract and retain volunteers. Here are some of the tips I shared. 1. Be organized and ready when people show up to volunteer. 2. Craft a positive experience for your volunteers. 3. Work on your internal issues. If there is disconnect or chaos around your board table, it will be felt by others. 4. Think outside the bubble. It’s easy to get caught up in our own circle of influence. 5. Tell people what you do and why. It’s highly likely that people aren’t even sure what your organization is all about. 6. Make it super easy for people to sign up to volunteer. And get back to them in a timely fashion. 7. Be respectful and appreciative of your volunteers and the time they contribute to your organization. What else would you add to the list?
