U.S. strategy on Pacific Islands is focused and guided by the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and to support the regional architecture led by the Pacific Island Forum (PIF). It was indeed a pleasure to participate in the preparation of these submissions on behalf of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This is the first step of many in this battle. This opportunity allowed SVG to join with global voices on this existential threat that gravely affects us across all sectors such as health, agriculture, tourism. It is a threat to our soverignty and self-determination. Climate change is not just an 'environmental problem'. Its impacts are multiscale/level/sectorial. While SIDS contribution to anthropogenic climate change is minute, the impacts on SIDS are ghastly. We bear the brunt of it. It is time for less pontification and more measurable positive actions - mitigation, reparation (compensation, restitution, transfer of technology, building human capacity, scholarships, contribution to the loss and damage fund, transition away from fossil fuels) adaptation...and the list continues #climatejustice #resilience #sustainability

Big News in Ocean Conservation! On April 24, 2024, the European Parliament voted for the EU to ratify the High Seas Treaty, marking a crucial milestone in the #RaceForRatification. This sends an important message to the rest of the world that the EU is serious about its role as a leader in ocean protection. What This Means: The vote in the European Parliament is an important part of a global effort to secure at least 60 ratifications needed for the treaty's entry into force. With the EU's backing, the focus now shifts to individual EU member states to expedite their national ratification processes. EU's Leadership Role: The EU has played a pivotal role in the negotiations of the High Seas Treaty. This most recent vote in favour of the Treaty highlights their continued leadership in global ocean governance. Looking Forward: The goal is to reach the necessary ratifications by the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in June 2025 in Nice, France. This is a critical step towards protecting our ocean for future generations. Support Needed: Now, more than ever, EU member states need to act swiftly. Governments formally adopted the High Seas Treaty in June. But for it to become law, it must be ratified by at least 60 countries. We have an opportunity this year to protect and conserve the High Seas. This area covers nearly one-half our entire blue planet’s surface but lies outside of any national jurisdiction. Last year, nation's of the world agreed to a High Seas Treaty. Promises need to be kept and at least 60 countries need to ratify the Treaty for it take effect and be meaningful. Once ratified, we can create protected areas across our one interconnected ocean, help conserve global biodiversity, our climate, and much more.
