First #manifesto out the door is promising for Civil Engineering Contractors Association (National) members. Liberal Democrats published earlier this morning and some solid CECA asks reflected. Hot takes include: Give more of the roads budget to local councils to maintain existing roads, pavements and cycleways, including repairing potholes. Significantly extend the electrification of Britain’s rail network, improve stations, greatly improve disabled access, reopen smaller stations and deliver Northern Powerhouse rail. Delivering Northern Powerhouse Rail to connect cities across the North of England. Reviewing the Conservatives’ cancellation of the northern leg of HS2 to see if it can still be delivered in a way that provides value for money, including by encouraging private investment, or if an alternative is viable. Working with local authorities to implement light rail schemes for trams and tram-trains where these are appropriate solutions to public transport requirements. Establishing a ten-year plan for rail electrification to increase the number of passenger journeys covered by electric trains, investing in other zero-carbon technologies including batteries, and ensuring all new rail lines are electrified as standard. Introducing a national freight strategy to move as much freight as possible from road to rail, supported by a freight growth target and electrification of freight routes. Introducing an international rail strategy to support new routes and operators, and permitting other operators to use the Channel Tunnel and HS1. Devolve greater decision-making powers and resources to local authorities in England to design public transport infrastructure around community needs, including powers to introduce network-wide ticketing as in London. Replacing the broken apprenticeship levy with a broader and more flexible skills and training levy.

Director at Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design | Mayor's Design Advocate | Passionate about creating good places
Infrastructure has to be the key focus of delivering homes in any number and particularly new towns. New towns and communities is a really good way to go but will be massively hampered if the key issue of how they will be served by power, services and connections (the last one really being about sustainable and active travel choice for those that live and work there) aren't at the forefront of any agenda. I also think there is a key issue here around proper scale (not just 5,000-10,000 homes), and avoiding homogeneity especially in terms of density and scale (homogenous squidge as I like to term it). People, structure, design and quality are vitally important but we won't get to that point without infrastructure and unpicking the many things that stop it being delivered properly or at all now.

"While it may be prudent for a political party that seems to be on the cusp of getting elected to say as little as possible, as we move deeper into actual campaigning, defined programmes will need be fully funded to be “tax bombshell” proof. This means that they will either be modest by comparison with the rhetoric, or vague enough to provide electoral cover." "Building’s own policy tracker highlights the narrow range of commitments made so far, with little clarity beyond some high-level targets for housebuilding, planning reform and ambitious green investment plans." #construction Today in Building Magazine, partner at Arcadis Simon Rawlinson examines the key uncertainties facing the construction industry, what opportunities might be up for grabs within the industry as well as the implications of the political climate. https://lnkd.in/eGfwFhra
