World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) ’s Post

In the News: The Challenges of 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫-𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐞 (31/12/2023) "Venice is to ban loudspeakers and tourist groups of more than 25 people, in a bid to ease the impact of mass tourism on the Italian city. The new rules will come into effect from June, the city said in a statement. The use of loudspeakers has been banned as they can 'generate confusion and disturbances', it added. Over-tourism is widely recognised as an urgent issue for the canal city, one of the most visited places in Europe." Your thoughts? Do you guide in Venice? Or in fact, anywhere in the world where over-tourism has become a significant challenge. We'd love to hear from you in the comments below. It is a BIG issue in Amsterdam, where i guide, too. We are not allowed to guide groups of more than 15 pax, only use Whispers (not loudspeakers), are not allowed to guide in Red Light District. From this year tour buses are no longer permitted within the center area. The problem though is, that the negative overtourism is especially caused by the cheap tourism especially from young British tourists, whom these measures do not discourage, but do chase the type of tourists we guide: the affluent, & culturally interested willing to spend the money here
