Colorado was +115%, North Dakota +38% and Iowa +34%. According to one model of gender called the "gender binary", everyone fits tidily into one of these categories: Woman/girl - all the time, solely, and completely (may be cisgender or transgender for the purposes of this survey) Man/boy - all the time, solely, and completely (may be cisgender or transgender for the purposes of this survey) This survey intends to collect information about everyone who DOESN'T fit into this system. Anyone who doesn't feel like they fit into one of these two boxes is invited to participate. There are no geographical restrictions. If you hesitate or struggle to place yourself into just one of the two boxes, or if you know for sure that these boxes were not made for you, please do continue! Helpful information: It is international and open to anyone, anywhere. The survey aims to collect information about the language we use to refer to ourselves when speaking English, which may include words from other languages or cultures. Most of the survey asks about four things: identity words, pronouns, titles, and family words. There is a feedback box at the end. Most people find that it takes 5 minutes or less. You can read the FAQs here. As in previous years, I'll go over the data and then compile it into a report. I hope that the information can be used to inform choices, persuade authorities, and help us to feel less alone. February is LGBT+ History Month. For the first time, in 2021 the UK Census recorded sexual orientation. The data collected through a census feeds into policy and decisionmaking that affects people's lives - so it's important that it can be understood and used. Yet according to a recent ONS release, there's an apparent paradox in the statistics. How can gay and lesbian adults be both more and less likely to be employed than heterosexual adults? The Brennan Center for Justice is making predictions about the likely district map for 2030 based on historic population trends. But we don't have to just sit back and let these trends unfold. We have agency. At MoveIndigo, we are serious about encouraging folks who are moving to consider policies and politics when they decide where to live. We want to help "unsort" the country. If we do, we will be promoting a more representative government in several ways: 1) more competitive districts will lead to less extreme candidates. The extreme right and extreme left candidates will not be able to succeed in general elections; 2) more "purple" places with a solid mix of people of all political persuasions means we will get to know each other better and will perhaps begin to unravel the growing polarization; 3) if the people who live in densely red or densely blue places spread out, we will inevitably get elected officials who are more aligned with majority public opinion and the popular vote. So, we should/will start to see legislation and government action that aligns with what the majority of the public wants on topics like gun safety, voting rights, access to reproductive health care, climate change and LGBTQ+ rights to name a few. We, pun-intended, can vote with our feet by seeking out purple places when we relocate. There are lots of great places to choose from in states as varied as Arizona, Oregon, Michigan, Florida, North Carolina, New York, New Mexico, California and Nebraska. The absence of an "other gender" option in the National Population Census 2024 poses a significant concern for the LGBTQ community in Nepal. By failing to acknowledge and include diverse gender identities, the census overlooks a crucial segment of the population, exacerbating feelings of invisibility and marginalization among LGBTQ individuals. This omission not only undermines the fundamental rights of LGBTQ people to be recognized and represented but also perpetuates societal stigmas and discrimination. The lack of visibility in official documentation further compounds the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community, impacting their mental health and well-being. Without accurate data on gender diversity, policymakers and service providers are ill-equipped to address the unique needs and concerns of LGBTQ individuals. This gap in representation hampers efforts to implement inclusive policies, allocate resources effectively, and provide essential services tailored to the LGBTQ population. Moreover, the failure to recognize diverse gender identities in the census reinforces societal norms that invalidate the experiences of transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals. This erasure contributes to higher rates of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and suicidality, as LGBTQ individuals contend with identity-related stressors and lack of affirmation. It is imperative that the National Population Census acknowledges and respects the full spectrum of gender identities to ensure the equitable treatment and well-being of all Nepali citizens. Failure to do so perpetuates systemic discrimination and denies LGBTQ individuals the visibility and validation they deserve as integral members of society.

The Census Bureau needs to hear from you! TAKE ACTION The U.S. Census Bureau is moving forward with plans to test gathering data on sexual orientation and gender identity through the American Community Survey. Public feedback is now being requested on whether to proceed with this testing. The American Community Survey provides crucial data on demographics and experiences of Americans, but currently does not include questions on sexual orientation and gender identity. This data guides federal spending of hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Inclusion of our communities in these efforts is vital for accurate representation. Advocating for the safe collection of information on sexual orientation and gender identity in demographic assessments, the Human Rights Campaign applauds the Census Bureau's steps. This initiative, backed by years of research, aims to ensure LGBTQ+ individuals are accurately represented in surveys, potentially leading to their inclusion in the decennial census. Supporting LGBTQ+ rights, recent Biden Administration regulations have implemented discrimination and harassment protections in various sectors. Your support is crucial in continuing these efforts to better understand and cater to our community's needs.
