Most wouldn't post this on LinkedIn! Some think I'm crazy. Some think I'm loud. Some think I do things in an unorthodox manner. I am unabashedly a Christian and proud of who I am. My entire famiy is from Kansas City. I was born a Chiefs, Royals, and Jayhawks fan. I'm proud to be a Thompson and sharing our W with them was special. There's also something special about this KC football team. They weren't in the power 10 rankings for over a month this year after losing several games in a row. They didn't have home field advantage and weren't picked by many if any to win. They beat every top team in the NFL in the playoffs and did so on the road: Miami Buffalo Baltimore San Francisco Don't EVER bet against Patrick Mahomes. He's unselfish, calm, cool, and collected even under extreme duress and is a true leader who has an unparalleled belief in himself and his teammates. He's had the best start of any NFL player ever. Andy Ried and Travis Kelce don't care what anyone thinks besides their teammates and respective coaches. The Chiefs stuck with players especially their wide receivers who had the MOST dropped passes of any team this year until it mattered. Sales leaders and managers should take a lesson from this. If you have a typical top performer who's struggling, do your best to find out why, motivate, and stick with them for as long as you can. Most can and will battle back and some will even end of back at the very top. This Chiefs team embodied perserverance and self belief when very few believed in them. They treated each other like family on and off the field even when things were chaotic with the press and they were losing. We can all do a better job of this is life and business!! Lastly, be unapologetically yourself. If you don't love yourself it's hard for others to love you back!! Go Chiefs and yes I know. I'm a little crazy! One on one time is integral with loved ones and employees! Managers who choose to spend even 10 minutes of one on one time at a sales meetings with their reps tend to have better relationships and less turnover. VP's and managers who ride along with their reps have better relationships and usually better performance. Couples who make date night happen and make each other a priority have better relationships. When a sales rep, loved one, or employee feels valued they tend to give it their all more often. Culture isn't created by having a ping pong table at your corporate office. Culture is created by making your most important resource, your PEOPLE, feel valued and heard. It takes time and sacrifice but is worth it. I don't get many one on ones nights with my kiddos. After a rough week, my son and I bonded. We shot hoops and talked. I let him know that I will ALWAYS push him but am also always here if he has anything he wants to ask me or talk to me about. I told him he can always count on me and that I will always have his back. I'm going to do the same with my daughter. Managers.... Can't we all do a better job of this? The McKesson Medical Surgical Enterprise Sales leadership team participated in a panel at the end of our national sales conference. We were asked about our advice on career paths and career advancement. I think we came up with some good answers. 1.) Pursue excellence in your role. If you want to move up, show why your are in the top 10% of your cohort. 2.) Take advantage of networking opportunities, especially when we are together at company-wide events. 3.) Find a mentor, be a mentor. 4.) Help your co-workers when asked. You want to be known as someone who is both competent and a team player. 5.) Tell your leaders about your career aspirations. We will help you get there. 6.) “Get out there and do your fricken job.” There’s no better way to advance your career than to show up and win consistently.
