🌟As I approach my 1-year anniversary at BAK Food Equipment, and reflecting "BAK" on my transition from a high-revenue corporate giant to a small, family-owned company, I wanted to share my thoughts on these experiences. 🌟 So what does this role entail? Here are some critical components of a manager in a relatively small (compared to $4B), family-owned operation: 1️⃣ Wearing Multiple Hats: In a small company, managers often find themselves juggling multiple roles. From overseeing day-to-day operations to diving into strategic planning, versatility is the name of the game. You will often find me in one of the 3 "big" buckets: sales, marketing or company strategy, all of which are intertwined. 2️⃣ Limited Resources: Working with constrained resources can be a double-edged sword. While it fosters creativity and resourcefulness, it also requires careful prioritization and a knack for doing more with less. 3️⃣ Decision-Making Agility: In a small company, decisions often need to be made swiftly and decisively. As a young professional, this is toughest area to navigate. 4️⃣ Managing Growth and Change: Small companies are dynamic environments where change is constant. Whether it's rapid growth, pivoting strategies, or adopting new procedures, I must be flexible and agile. Navigating the intricacies of a management role in a small company has been both rewarding and challenging. As BAK and I continue to grow, I plan to keep everyone updated. I recently got promoted to Chief Product Officer at NielsenIQ and with that, came a lot more responsibility. I wasn’t acutely aware of how many stakeholders were involved in our organization, or the intricate conversations I would help facilitate - These days, product is always on the agenda. Success requires a lot of preparation. I’m constantly creating content for board meetings, customer engagements, discussions with investors, lawyers, and everyone else involved in the global work we do. That means drafting narratives that depict our evolving story. Evaluating our wins and losses objectively, and translating those to unique audiences - something I haven’t done in the past. It can take months to properly design, especially when you take into account who’s receiving the message and what their goals or questions will be. But I appreciate the challenge this position offers. Leadership demands a different level of transparency, and a more complex perspective. You have to view the world both on macro and micro levels, and learn to navigate diverse communities and conversations. You can’t be timid or scared you’ll mess up. I approach any opportunity like this with a willingness and excitement to learn, and an appreciation for the door that was opened for me.

We’ve recently been asked a lot to work as an objective third party to validate new models, operational speed and service enhancements, new transformation initiatives (from changes in positioning to new prototypes to what geographies to launch into to how to reconfigure the tech stack in a modernized operating environment), long-term strategic plans, and brand portfolios. It's clear from our view that the global restaurant industry is entering a new era of modernization, transformation, reimagined CapEx deployment, and operational enhancements. The value of a professional second opinion cannot be overstated given how fast consumer dining behaviors are evolving. And no matter what, you will get a second opinion. If you don’t get a second opinion from an expert, you’ll get it from the market (and from critics or activists).
