There is a gender equity gap in healthcare and an urgent need to address it. Every day, nearly 800 women around the world die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth according to the World Health Organization. As we commemorate International Day of Action for Women's Health, let’s focus on the challenge of reaching more women with necessary services, especially taking into account drastic understaffing in clinics and hospitals around the world. #HealthEquity #WomensHealth

Maternal mortality rates are disproportionately higher among women with disabilities due to various factors, including limited access to healthcare, inadequate support services, and discrimination. Studies reveal that women with disabilities are at least twice as likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth compared to women without disabilities. Addressing this issue requires a comprehensive approach that includes ensuring equal access to maternal healthcare, providing appropriate accommodations, and promoting awareness about the specific needs of this population. In both the UK and the US, Black women are four times more likely to die during pregnancy, labor, and one year post-labor following complications, compared to white women. These disparities persist due to limited access, systemic discrimination and implicit bias in maternal healthcare. This reality highlights the importance of amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, such as the Eritrean mothers I've had the opportunity of speaking with, whose experiences shed light on the challenges women face in their journey to motherhood. Each of them has endured various forms of trauma while navigating the medical system, yet remarkably; they've carried these burdens silently and in isolation. And this is why we have created this safe space for them to speak openly about the trials they've faced on their journey. A supportive platform for them to be heard, come together, and know they're not alone in their journey. The first segment will feature two Eritrean mothers, providing them with an open platform to freely express themselves in the language they feel most comfortable with: English, Tigrigna, or a mix of both. We aim to increase awareness of the systemic disparities in maternal healthcare and offer a nurturing environment for healing and empowerment. We are keeping this conversation limited to exclusive access. 💐 Happy Mother's Day! 💐 As we celebrate the incredible strength, love, and resilience of mothers worldwide, let's also take a moment to reflect on the importance of maternal health. Every pregnancy and birth should be a positive experience, ensuring the well-being of both mothers and their babies. Despite significant progress, the reality remains stark: according to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 287,000 women lost their lives during and following pregnancy and childbirth in 2020. This number is unacceptably high. The most common causes of maternal injury and death are often preventable with timely and skilled care. While advancements in technology have undoubtedly improved maternal care, we still face challenges in ensuring every woman has access to quality healthcare. As individuals, there are steps we can take to contribute to reducing maternal deaths. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet is crucial for good maternal health, educating ourselves and others about maternal health, advocating for accessible and equitable healthcare services, supporting organizations working in this field, and promoting gender equality are all crucial actions we can take. No woman should ever have to face the risk of death while bringing life into this world. Let's continue to work together to ensure that every mother receives the respect, care, and support she deserves throughout her maternal journey. Empowering birthing patients to amplify their voices & teaching nurses, midwives & physicians how to listen and hear their patients is essential to combating the maternal health crisis in the United States. Birthing centers for low-risk pregnant patients is a necessary strategy to address both Maternity Deserts and the impact racism has on maternal outcomes in this country. On #internationalwomensday2024 we think a little more about women's issues than usual, but, honestly, they are never far from Louise Chunn and Alice McGurran's mind at Welldoing.org.

It's International Women's Day, and traditionally much of the discourse on this day is about asking society to treat women the same way it treats men. While this is an admirable goal in many contexts, it is equally important for us to invest in systems and mindsets that elevate women from positions of health disadvantage. What are we talking about? We are talking about policies, practices, and mindsets that support: ✅ safe access to contraception, and high quality information about contraception. ✅ safe access to pregnancy termination, because abortion is health care. ✅ safe access to high quality antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care - both physical and mental. ✅ breastfeeding education and support. ✅ adequate paid maternity leave. ✅ facilities and time for breastfeeding mums to continue to breastfeed or pump milk after returning to work. Leveling the playing field involves building systems to elevate the unwittingly and unintentionally disadvantaged.
