In the American Civil War (1861–1865), 11 Southern States seceded from the Union (North) over differences on slavery, states’ rights, and economic disparities. This article provides a brief history of the civil war, its causes, and the key battles—from the First Battle of Bull Run to the final battle in Appomattox Court House—that shaped the course of American history. It delves into President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which changed the course of the war, leading to the abolition of slavery. Though the civil war ended sectionalism in the US, it had long-lasting effects on the US’ domestic and international policies.
