A newly published ICPRB pamphlet, Potomac Basin Trends in Water Use, summarizes forecasted reported water withdrawals and consumptive use in the Potomac basin. Understanding current and anticipated water use is vital for sustainable water resources planning today and into the future. Consumptive Use (CU) is the portion of water withdrawn from a resource and not returned for subsequent use. Examples of CU: evaporated irrigation and cooling water, bottled drinking water, and water consumed by people or livestock. Things to consider when purchasing an Agricultural Rainwater Harvesting System. 1. Assessment of Rainfall and Water Needs: Evaluate the annual average rainfall in your region and estimate the water requirements for your land. 2. Roof Collection Area: Work out the roof area available for rainwater collection. Calculate the potential volume of water that can be collected based on the rainfall and roof area. 3. Gutter System: If you don't already have one, install gutters along the edges of the roof to collect rainwater. Make sure there is an adequate slope to direct water towards downpipes 4. Filtration System: Depending on your area, your roof is likely to collect leaves and debris. Consider installing a filter to divert the initial rainwater flow. All Ecosure ARWH systems include a large filter. 5. Tank Placement: Position the tank on a flat, level base. 6. Pump and Distribution System: If required, install a pump to distribute water to different parts of the farm. Consider using a drip irrigation system for efficient water use. 7. Maintenance: While Ecosure tanks require very little maintenance. It is still a good idea to schedule regular maintenance for the entire system. Inspect the roof, gutters, filters, and water tank. Soil moisture is an important hydraulic parameter in a product ecosystem. In Magoye catchment which has been serverly hit by El Nino the natural ponding of water has been greatly reduced partly by the drought and siltation from deposition of silt that comes with runoff and eroded soils. #Disilting can increase the amount of water returned by the natural ponds. #Cluster Irrigation is also a solution to make the small scale farmers more resilient to drought as opposed to individual investments. #The water productivity has to be enhanced if the communities are going to be food secure.
