For our Mashujaa day 🇰🇪, we highlight Nisa, an expert guide who explains and goes into deeper detail about the animals and teaches conservation while on a game drive! Due to poaching, habitat loss, and disease Rhinos have currently been listed as Critically Endangered or Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Rhinos are keystone species. This means that they play a crucial role in their ecosystem, and their disappearance would have a cascading effect on other species. For example, rhinos help to maintain the balance of vegetation by grazing on different types of plants. This helps to create a diverse habitat that can support a variety of other wildlife species. Today is World Wildlife Day! Let's take a moment to think about our amazing wildlife and how important it is to protect them. Did you know there are about 8.7 million different species on Earth? But sadly, many of them are in danger of disappearing forever. According to the latest data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), more than 44,000 species are categorized into 9 risk levels, signaling their vulnerability to extinction. As we strive to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 15, it becomes increasingly crucial for us to take decisive action to preserve these species and their habitats. In line with this imperative, a recent lecture was organized for the MA Sustainable Development Practices class, featuring Dr. Gaurav Barhodiya, an esteemed Assistant Professor from Delhi University. During this enlightening session, students engaged with Dr. Barhodiya to deepen their understanding of wildlife trafficking in India and the escalating threats faced by endangered species such as tortoises, snakes, pangolins, rhinos, and elephants. The surge in market demand for their shells, skins, horns, or tusks has only exacerbated these challenges. Dr. Barhodiya's insights have inspired us to actively participate in conservation initiatives and make informed choices that promote the well-being of animals and their habitats. Space for Giants conducted an aerial baseline survey at Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve in September. The aerial survey represents the start of a new phase in assessing and managing biodiversity threats across the landscape. Historically, Pian Upe recorded the existence of endangered elephant, and rhino populations poached to extinction. In recent years, this situation has intensified because of the absence of an effective conservation presence and is exacerbated by habitat loss and regional conflict dynamics. To support conservation planning and management decisions, there is a pressing need to provide a solid baseline estimate of the wildlife population and human activity by the local communities. This information will facilitate an assessment of the impacts of a rapidly changing human demography and allow for identifying species and area targets needing improved protection. Furthermore, it will further stimulate strong protected area management initiatives to save the remaining species and assist efforts to update and improve wildlife population estimates for the whole reserve while bringing cohesive conservation benefits to the local communities. With our partners, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Karimojong Overland Safaris, and the Local District Governments, we are thrilled to participate in Pian Upe’s revolutionary journey towards significantly advancing global biodiversity and driving positive conservation outcomes. This year’s World Wildlife Day theme is exploring digital innovation and highlighting how digital conservation technologies and services can drive wildlife conservation, sustainable and legal wildlife trade and human-wildlife coexistence, now and for future generations in an increasingly connected world. One successful example is European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) Biobank, a well-established resource supporting population management and conservation research created by the European and Western Asian zoo and aquarium community. Given the expanding needs and possibilities for the use of molecular tools in population management it is necessary to ensure optimal and long-term storage of high-quality material that will have a significant impact on future population management and conservation research. The EAZA Biobank meets these requirements and is a unique international initiative collecting and storing samples from 400 member institutions located in 48 countries! “What can I do to help protect wildlife?” Whenever I hear this question it brings me so much joy. To me this demonstrates that people are conscious of the environment, wildlife, the future, and the rich biodiversity our world has to offer. A few steps we can be taking to help protect endangered species: •Spread the word! We should be speaking up for endangered species. •Be a responsible tourist, respect their homes. •Voice your concerns with policy makers, pledge your support for tiger conservation. •Reduce your carbon footprint. •Help prevent Wildlife Trade. Say no to poachers by donating to a wildlife conservation organization.
