Americans were on track to spend about $95 billion this year on tickets to spectator amusements, including movies, live entertainment, and sporting events, according to August data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. That is up 23% from last year,  12.5% higher than the $84.4 billion spent on the same entertainment in 2019, the previous year before the pandemic shut down most spectator events. Spending at theme parks, campgrounds, and related services is on track to hit $79.9 billion this year, up 3.4% from 2022 and 6.2% from 2019.

As people scramble to get to the Sphere or Taylor Swift I thought this interview with my friend Patrick Workman was timely. Despite being one of the biggest rock bands in history, PEARL JAM was unable to utilize their own ticketing system for their shows. The issue lies in the excessive strictness of exclusive deals between venues in the US, which force artists to sign up with major vendors like Ticketmaster. This limitation not only hampers the artists' control over their ticketing processes but also restricts competition and potentially hinders a more democratic system. There needs to be structure available to advocate for a ticketing system that provides more value to creators and empowers them with greater autonomy in managing their shows. The idea of moving towards a more inclusive and empowering system for artists in the music industry. The Margins exist so it can make sense but structure to allow competition just does not seem to be there forcing margins and market share in the same 1 or 2 places. #musicbusiness #competition #openmarket #machine
