IMO: Seems like the real problem nationally is the “corporatization of medicine” rather than “physician burnout” or “overwhelmed” physicians which have such negative connotations. As life expectancy now in the US is far lower than other developed countries, where is the accountability in absence of physician leadership in medicine. Do the C-Suite executives have to take the Hippocratic Oath or is it all about revenue for non-profits. Al Lewis with Quizzify shared a post with me recently that brought up a few points of concern so I felt compelled to share them: 1. Private Equity investment in Cardiology (already in orthopedics, gastroenterology, and oncology). 2. Navigation vendors (services providers) - while good at steering people from hospitals to more efficient outpatient centers, their job is not to teach employees to questions whether they need a procedure in the first place. 3. Employee Cost dis-incentive? - For the most part the employees portion is such a small percentage of the total cost that it eliminates their reason to decline the procedure, unless they've been questioning the necessity form the beginning. This leads to Al's quote, "Just because it's healthcare doesn't mean it's good for you." And no truer words were ever spoken. Medical mistakes are the 3rd most common cause of death in the U.S., and a major cause of permanent disabilities. Adding not only financial cost to the high price of healthcare but the emotional impact to the patient and their family. That's why services like Quizzify are so important, to teach employees how to make better healthcare decisions, not just for the employer's health plan, but for themselves. Fresh insights from the UKISCRS Society event on "Why You Should Do Private Practice." Big thanks to Laura Maubon for setting the stage! 🌟 First off, it was great to see the #FourBusinessModels on display, represented by both successful and generous ophthalmologists. Each delivered thought-provoking and balanced talks from direct experience - the best kind of talk, in my opinion. 1️⃣ **Romesh Angunawela of OCL Vision**: Starting a private medicine business (with partners like Ali Mearza and Allon Barsam) is no small feat. It's challenging and comes with its share of risks. Yet, when done right, it can redefine the norm. I've seen this, too - big ventures need big courage, and Romesh et al. have got it in spades. Congratulations to all of you. 2️⃣ **Alastair Stuart, formerly of London Vision Clinic, now with Optegra Eye Health Care**: Jumping into private work takes planning. Alistair's journey from being a fellow under Dan Reinstein to contracting with Optegra shows that. With corporate backing, you might have less autonomy, but you also get solid support in areas like marketing and finance. 3️⃣ **Andrew Turnbull from South Coast Vision**: There's a sweet spot in balancing private practice with NHS duties. Andy’s approach of dedicating one day a week for surgeries at the Nuffield, plus his four-day commitment to the NHS, seems just right. It's not always about more work; it's about the right work. 4️⃣ **Bernard Chang of Newmedica**: The Independent Sector has been booming since the pandemic, with now over 2000 cataract surgeries performed daily. They're not just reducing NHS waiting times but also shaping new ophthalmologists. Bernie’s emphasis? Treat patients swiftly without compromising care quality. Speed and quality can coexist! My main takeaway? Romesh said it during the Q&A (and I'll paraphrase): The NHS isn't the monopoly employer for ophthalmologists anymore. Diversity in practice models is enriching the field, and that’s a plus for everyone. EyeCare Partners Chief Clinical Officer Antonio Capone Jr MD, FACS, was a featured speaker at the XXXIII Infopoverty World Conference on site recently at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.   Dr. Capone presented on the topic of "Teleassistance with a Shared Database in an Overlooked Patient Population,” drawing on his work and that of his colleague RV Paul Chan, MD, in telemedicine for Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a scarring and potentially blinding disorder of the retina in newborn premature infants. Retinopathy of prematurity remains a significant threat to vision for extremely premature infants despite the availability of therapeutic modalities that can, in up to 99% of cases, effectively manage this disorder. Having an ROP expert at every infant’s bedside may be ideal, Dr. Capone stated, but diagnosing and treating the disease takes experience and knowledge that is not always available globally. This is where telemedicine and telementoring help.   Dr. Capone cited global partnerships with doctors from Mongolia, Nepal and India, using technology to share knowledge and resources across continents. He also shared examples of working with colleagues to develop digital tools, powered by artificial intelligence, to serve as “expertise extenders,” helping physicians to appropriately diagnose and treat ROP, preventing blindness in affected children worldwide. He also emphasized the importance of data analysis at the local level so physicians on the ground can adapt treatments as needed to meet the needs of their patient population. Priorities should also include a multi-disciplinary, team-based approach to care, leveraging technology and investments in data, pipeline programs, leadership development and advocacy.   Find Dr. Capone’s talk here, beginning at the 28:18 mark: https://lnkd.in/dqdZNttP

March marks endometriosis awareness month and for my project last year, I explored different interventions to improve the diagnostic journey for patients. This project was overwhelmed with complex research, and the diverse nature of endo that made me really feel for those who have to face this uncertainty. I cannot be more thankful for the participants who shared their experiences, and really deepened my understanding and motivation to keep going. As I advocate for more funding into medical research, I also call upon designers to embrace what we know in human-centred design.
