Meet Carmen Del Valle! - How long have you been at the firm? I have been with the firm for 20 years, but as Bill Stock has said, “dealing with me for 25.” What he means is that I started working with Bill while he and Ron were still attorneys at their past firm. - What is your current role? I became Administrative Supervisor around 5 years ago, and currently supervise all the amazing executive and legal assistants at the firm. - How has your job changed over the years? The biggest changes have been over time, 20 years ago we had stacks of paper files everywhere, but now everything is digital. We used to fax things all the time, and now we email everything. We also used to have an extensive phone system, now it's mostly emails or texts. - What is your favorite memory from your early days at the firm? One of the funniest memories is when we had a Philadelphia-themed Boss’s Day celebration. We had all things Philly: cheesesteaks for lunch, Tastykakes, and the Benjamin Franklin came to the office. I didn’t get it at the time, but all the younger staff members at the office were cracking up because it was like the episode of The Office in real life. - What do you value most about working at KILP? The friendships I’ve made have been the most valuable. A group of us have become more than just coworkers, we are truly friends. We started as such a small firm and would hang out a lot outside of work. I still keep in touch with many who have left the firm and it’s great to see where life has taken us all. - What has been one of the more challenging times? Working from home during COVID. Working from home just wasn’t for me. So, I started coming in every day during lockdowns. Luckily it worked well for the firm and I was able to manage a lot of stuff onsite while everyone else stayed home. I still love coming into the office every day. - Anything else you want to share? Just that the people we work with are amazing. It’s the mutual respect and understanding that we are people with lives outside work, that makes it so easy to bring my best self to work. I truly value that.

Simpson Thacher joins Skadden, Davis Polk, Weil, Ropes & Gray, and Vinson & Elkins (among others) in mandating 4 days in the office for associates. This will raise obvious issues for the many lawyers who've grown accustomed to working mainly from home. Let's hope that the gold standard return-to-work policy includes abundant provisions for flexibility -- critical talent could well pick up and leave without this. Here's what I'd like to know: What is the work-from-home policy for partners and counsel? And will that policy be enforced? If the people you're working for-- the people who should be training, mentoring, and sponsoring you, and the ones who are managing the firm and its constituents - are not strolling the hallways with you then the firm's culture will remain compromised. There are immense benefits to an in-office working life, the most basic being cultural. Deeper friendships; more meaningful mentoring; better hands-on training; essential visibility and opportunities to network, pitch, and self-promote; healthy collegiality and collaboration; and -if you're disposed to such things--a good deal of restorative fun and laughter. COVID spawned terrible loneliness for some--and graduated millions who had never worked in an actual office. For way too many, that loneliness has only partially lifted. I want to believe that getting back to in-real-life- will help. If you'd asked me --when I was an associate and pandemics were just in the movies--I would have told you I wouldn't trade the time spent eye-to-eye (and sometimes arm-in-arm) with colleagues, clients, peers, and friends for anything. #wfh #rtw #lawfirms #associates

Cozens are publicly allocating work to people who come into the office. These are interesting times, as organisations use several levers to attract staff back to the office. We see the 'nudge' end - like free lunches, to the 'stick' end - where bonus impact is mentioned. Cozens is simply publicly stating what many businesses already do. Those who are visible are more likely to receive the myriad opportunities that support career growth. 5 day office weeks are gone, but we must do more to help our junior staff value in person integration. The pain of good staff in the office: 1: He has to do the hard work, because no one else can do it. 2: He has to do the easy work, because the easy work; What need to give to someone else! 3: You have to give the fast service to him, because if you give it to someone else, it will be delayed. 4: Personal acquaintance, so the service has to be given to him. Because if you go to another desk, that assessment will not happen. 5: You can't go home first after finishing your own work, because the work of others is not finished yet. 6: If you do so, you can make a mistake, so you have to do it yourself so that it is not wrong. 6: Even after working a lot, if you sit for some time, you have to listen, the work is still going on !!! 6: Emergency leave is needed, but can not be taken! Because who will handle his desk? 9: If you don't want to do one thing in the pressure of many things, you have to listen, if we want to give work, you don't want to do it .. 10: Even if you do a lot of things right, but one day you make a mistake, you have to listen to everyone's criticism. 11: If there is too much work at his desk, it is not taken into account. But if he is given to another desk if necessary, his work is divided into innumerable desks. 12: It is not possible to give more when giving ACR, you have to do justice! Because everyone works, so you have to do good.

Furthermore, the clients I have brought to the board room are universally impressed and my colleagues are jealous of the view from my window.
