I was fortunate enough to attend the impressive Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York during the recent International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. While I was forced to miss the stunning India vs Pakistan encounter on 9th June (cancelled flight from Barbados), I followed closely on ESPN with much jealousy of my colleagues in attendance and with a rum punch for company🍹 As a wide-eyed kid, I was enchanted by the FIFA World Cup USA ‘94 and so began a lifelong love affair with sport. I was watching on from afar but seeing USA beat Colombia in the packed out Pasadena Rose Bowl in front of 94,000, I was in awe of the achievement - even at that age I was aware that “Americans do not play football”. USA striker Eric Wynalda, who played that famous game in Pasadena, once said: “I think it may have been the turning point. I think the starting point for all of this was when [Paul] Caligiuri scored in Trinidad [to get the US into the 1990 World Cup]. And the turning point for Americans accepting the sport was the Colombia game. It was just real. The US was not just participating; we were enjoying some success for the first time.” I finally got to Nassau for the much-anticipated India vs USA match on 12th June. Witnessing cricket being taken to the US was one thing, but seeing the temporary bleachers full to the brim with manic cricket fans overflowing with passion for the game (and for both teams) reminded myself of an awestruck 8-year-old me. The US weren’t able to get past eventual champions India - they ran them pretty close - but had by then already experienced their “Colombia” moment with victory over Pakistan in Dallas. Even playing a very small part in this project has provided so much satisfaction, but that will continue to swell as cricket thrives in North America in the years to come. After 32 years, FIFA will return to the US in 2026, with the average Major League Soccer franchise now worth $658 million and with estimated broadcast rights deals valued at around $3 billion. The MLS launched in 1993, one year before they hosted the World Cup. Major League Cricket started its 2nd season this week - I can only imagine where the MLC will be in 30 years time. Here’s hoping the ICC will return to the USA (plus Canada and Mexico) again before 2056… Tagging those pictured only: Fara Gorsi Claire Furlong Sipokazi Sokanyile Joanna Taylor Alannah White Akshay Narula Ben Wise Sonali Dhulap Abhideep Das Kate Walkey Emily Groves Shomeresh Shetty Mark Jones Tom Dunmore Rrahul Mehta
