I haven’t posted on here for a little while so wanted to explain why I’ve taken a little pause on social media. My Dad found out his time was limited so we dropped everything and made plans to travel back to the UK. Unfortunately, he passed before we caught our first flight as everything happened very quickly. We’re back in the UK spending time with family now and helping to make funeral arrangements. I had no idea how much there was to do when somebody passes away. Losing someone when you live so far away was something we’ve dreaded happening, but it’s something we always knew would happen one day. This is the impossible, messy, upsetting side of relocating across the world. But it is the reality of living a long way from your family. I’m very thankful that my husband, kids and I were able to come back together (having a husband that works for an airline is very helpful at times like this). I’m thankful we have been able to be here to support my Mum and spend time with the rest of our family. I’m glad we’ll be here for the funeral (although Matt has taken the kids to the South Coast to visit his family and has just caught COVID – awful timing - so we’ll have to take it a day at a time). As times goes on, I’m sure I’ll write a blog post about the experience. Going through it has taught me a lot. More than anything it has reminded me that I can do hard things – I just need to take one step at a time. Also, it's a reminder that that nobody knows what is around the corner so it's so important that we follow our dreams and live our lives to the fullest. I think everyone dreads this happening. There is no rule book as to how you manage things. We’d talked about how we’d deal with this in theory but in reality those decisions go out of the window and you need to figure out what feels right in the moment. Normal service will be resumed in a couple of weeks. You Don't Know What You Don't Know ... Last weekend I met with neighbours whose Mum is in hospital after a stroke. As she's no longer able to live at home, they were handed a list of all the Residential Aged Care Homes in the suburbs of Adelaide. Highlighted in yellow were ten homes in the southern suburbs. They wanted me to cast my eye over the list and flag any to watch out for. I was happy to do that, but asked them to tell me some of Mum's ageing story first. In no time, they realised that they knew very little about the Aged Care system, what to expect and how to go about this next stage of Mum's journey. They said, "We didn't know it was so involved. We don't want to make a mistake and we don't understand the finances, or how to choose the best home for Mum." I referred them to two professionals: - the right Aged Care Placement Consultant for their particular circumstances (it's not a one-size-fits-all). - an Aged Care Finance Specialist who will explain the convoluted numbers game, what all the acronyms mean, how Mum's finances will pan out over the course of this journey AND he will do all of this in 'plain English.' "Can I ask you a question about Dad's situation?" I'm often asked this. People usually think this is their only issue, but once the conversation begins, the floodgates open and an entire river of stories gush forth. Please don't wait for a crisis, a hospitalisation or a family drama. By planning long before people think they need help, the whole process can be less dramatic, stressful, overwhelming and time-consuming. Planning for ageing is like going on a trip. You have several options: 1/ You can get in the car and drive wherever the road takes you and potentially end up in a strange little town of no interest to you. OR 2/ You can get on the internet and look at every travel site you can find, spend copious amounts of time gathering information and book all the travel yourself. Sounds ok, but what happens when the Syrian refugee crisis affects your train trip from Prague to Budapest and all the train lines into Hungary are closed? (This happened to us). OR 3/ You can go to a Travel Agent who specialises in booking trips, both local and international. You simply tell them what you want to do and leave it to them to do all the research, get the best flights, book the accommodation etc. And, when the Syrian Refugee crisis impacts your trip, you do as we did. We contacted RAA Travel back in Adelaide. They gave us the most up-to-date international government information and told us how to proceed. Smooth, seamless, stress-free. And all because we used the right people to help us create a great plan! And so it is with the Aged Care journey. The right planning will create the best outcome, for both the elderly person AND their family.

With many of us being in the midst of travel season, I felt this might be worth a share. Vacations are supposed to be relaxing and an opportunity to disconnect from the hustle of our day to day. Ideally, (he says with a tone of frustration) vacations do not involve disappointment, hours on the phone with repeated transfers and differnt numbers for different departments with different areas of accountability. I reminded myself, and am taking a moment to remind others, with family week upon us, that the customer care agents do the best they can. While they work for the company and are accountable to the traveller, they are not responsible for the errors, delays, or cancellations. Like many things in life, approaching conversations with kindness and empathy will get you much further when having these conversation. Yes, lost time, lost money, are risks with any travel.
