SVB 2024 Wine Industry report is out and I consider it core reading for anyone in the industry. Key takeaways include a decline in DTC volume and value wines, fewer consumers drinking wine, and the potential for overproduction from vineyards in 2024. Bright spots include premium wines and imports. https://lnkd.in/gVpKkYkB

Rob McMillan and his team have prepared the definitive report on the state of the U.S. wine industry from more than 20 years. As it's at the nexus of two of my interests — wine and business — I always read with interest. This year's report is more compelling than ever. As Rob says, the industry is suffering, the move shift towards premium has pretty well played out, and younger drinkers have tastes far from wine, especially as many more are staying away from alcohol all together. I'm not in a position to help the industry address its more systemic challenges (although I would welcome the chance). But I think there is a lot that wine lovers can do to pass their passion along to younger friends and colleagues. In my last role, a few colleagues and I started a group for people interested in wine, and were explicit that no prior knowledge was required. The idea was to make wine a little less imposing, especially for younger colleagues, while introducing a few key concepts and helping people work out what they like. We hosted regular tastings and tried to give everyone a range of options to explore. Often, colleagues were surprised by what they enjoyed most. But our most inspired idea was to gather the wine lists from local restaurants near our office and put on a tasting with a few wines from each. That way, if colleagues were hosting clients, friends, or whatever, they would already have some knowledge of the wine list and could be comfortable and confident that they could identify something good. It's easy to see how this sort of model could be applied elsewhere. Lots of people want to learn about wine. Here in London, smart retailers are putting on events that invite people to discover wine and figure out their own tastes. But there is a lot more to do. And I'd love to see the industry embrace the challenge of teaching alongside its substantial marketing efforts. From a communications perspective, the whole industry needs a fresh approach. In the same way producers are experimenting with new varietals, the industry needs to try new ways of reaching its audiences, especially younger ones. (And, just to be clear, I'm not advocating alcohol at every company event or meal. I appreciate the sensitivities around this topic and the need for the exercise of careful judgement and caution. I also realise that the relationship between the communications industry and alcohol has long been fraught. The decision to drink or not is an individual choice that should be respected, and any event should include measures to ensure that everyone feels comfortable, regardless of whether or not they are tasting.) #wine #winebusiness
The #SVB State of the US Wine Industry Report is available for download, as is the video replay of the live videocast. The US wine industry has finally come to grips with the reality that our product is declining in total demand, and premiumization, while still in evidence, is on its last legs. Despite years of prior warnings from this report and elsewhere of late, the industry chose to do nothing. The question I have is, what will we do? Will we come together and collaborate to improve the situation, or will we scatter and try to compete against each other? I win. You lose. Of course, doing nothing is still a choice.
