Tug #boats are essential part of marine port operations to bring larger vessels into and out of ports. Tugs are smaller vessels but are operating most parts of the day, and consume significant fuel. Any alternative marine fuel should match the #energy densities of the current #diesel fuel. Methanol has less than half of the energy density of diesel but has practical advantages over other alternative fuels. This new planned methanol powered tug would help understand the reality of #methanol fuel in such end-use application. #marinefuels #hydrogen

Lloyd's Register has analysed last year's #vessel orders and #fuel tech developments and seen #methanol engine retrofits as a 'defining trend'. 143 new construction #orders of methanol-capable vessels were placed in 2023. Clarksons: 45% of newbuilds ordered in 2023 alternative fuel capable Shipbroker Clarksons reports 45% of newbuildings ordered last year are capable of running on alternative fuels The latest edition of Clarksons Research’s Green Technology Tracker published data indicating nearly half of all vessels ordered in 2023 by tonnage will be capable of running on some form of alternative fuel. 539 units or 33.8M gt ordered were reported to have alternative fuel capability in 2023, which accounts for nearly 45% of ordered tonnage. The orderbook shows a trend of more and more alternative fuel-capable ships. In 2021, 31% of new tonnage ordered was for alternative fuel-capable vessels, up from 27% in 2020 and 8% in 2016. LNG-capable dual-fuel vessels comprise the largest share of these new orders, tallying 220 vessels, with 152 being for LNG carriers. Earlier this month Wärtsilä Marine introduced a new ultra-low emission version of its Wärtsilä 31DF engine, an engine regarded as extremely efficient, even before its upgrade.   The new technology improves the emissions profile of the dual-fuel LNG engine, particularly when operating at low and medium loads, offering significant emissions reductions for those operating on short-sea routes with regular port calls.    Clean Shipping International’s recent article about Wärtsilä’s new engine technology outlines the emissions reduction statistics when operating on LNG - ”this new version can further reduce methane emissions on a 50% load point by up to 56% and NOx by up to 86%.”   Levels of methane slip have been reduced by a factor of four since LNG-fuelled engines were introduced in the early 2000s and today, the LNG-fuelled vessel order book is dominated by engine technologies with low, or negligible levels of methane slip and we continue to see breakthroughs, further mitigating its impact.   For more information, find Clean Shipping International’s article linked below.   https://lnkd.in/e3mxy5hh #ShipsAndShipping #Decarbonisation #LNG
