Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum’s Post

Juneteenth (June 19th) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.   Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. June 19th officially became a federal holiday in 2021.   I encourage you to read more about Juneteenth here: The Historical Legacy of Juneteenth | National Museum of African American History and Culture (si.edu) (See below) Also, here is some of the text from the Emancipation Proclamation:   "That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive Government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom” Abraham Lincoln     You should know this, but if not, The Emancipation Proclamation did not lead to the Civil War. The Civil War started two years earlier in 1861, primarily over disagreements over slavery, and ended in 1865.

What purpose do Museums serve? When fact-checking is so easy using Google and Wikipedia and YouTube is awash with documentaries, you could be forgiven for thinking, that Museums might be a thing of the past (excuse the pun). But the good news is that we have hundreds of Museums of all shapes and sizes with terrific stories to tell. While the pandemic in 2020/21 was an obvious disruption for Museums, many benefitted from the reorganisation as even basic things like the layout of exhibits and visitor routes had to be designed to be more efficient. https://lnkd.in/egbP2XMR

There are dozens of maritime museums across the United States. One might think that they would help Navy recruiting, but that might not be the case. They are historically accurate in the presentation of living conditions on ships from the last century, but since living conditions have dramatically improved on Navy ships, that may give a false negative impression to potential recruits today. The Navy should offer maritime museums materials to depict modern day berthing conditions and turn a potential negative impression into a positive one.

Is re-enacting history more than just playing war?   In a world where (digital) media and museums nowadays seem to be the primary sources of historical knowledge, the work of Lise Zurné offers a fresh perspective on how we can experience and understand history. For a report with Trouw, Zurné visited the 277th Volks-Grenadier Division, a re-enactment group that recreates German anti-aircraft units from World War II. She discusses how "playing war" can provide an immersive historical experience and offer a broader perspective on history. With growing mandates and virtually stagnant funding for the last couple decades, #museums and #heritage organizations have ever-reducing capacities. One of the answers is to join forces to go further together than we can alone. https://lnkd.in/eSF-U2Hr "If one were to show that harms to heritage can weigh against harms to people, one would thereby lay the justificatory groundwork not only for intentionally harming someone who is destroying heritage but also for collaterally harming innocent people in the course of protecting heritage. Indeed, it’s hard to see how one could make a case for military intervention without showing the permissibility of collaterally harming innocent people, since wars inevitably inflict collateral damage. Of course, such harms are constrained by the requirements of proportionality and necessity. And since harms to innocent bystanders are harder to justify than harms to culpable attackers, one would need to be protecting more, or more valuable, heritage to be permitted to collaterally kill an innocent person, compared to the amount of heritage one would need to be protecting to justify killing a culpable attacker. (Here, too, then, one needs an account of the value of heritage that enables one to make these comparisons.) But once one grants the general claim that protecting heritage warrants harming people, there is no principled way to restrict this to harming those intent on destroying heritage."

But if you're into history and especially military history, like I am, you will love the USS Midway Museum in San Diego. Took the family there a few years ago and the day we visited the Midway was the highlight of the trip. For me at least. So I was pleased and surprised to find this video the other day. ERA helped the folks there on a number of cost savings initiatives. It just proves the point that we can help pretty much any kind of business, including non-profits, reduce expenses and thereby benefit the overall mission and experience. #costreduction #expensemanagement
