With the Kentucky Derby happening this weekend, I thought it would be timely to review the 2009 race. As a 50-1 underdog, Mine That Bird won the race over the heavy favorites Dunkirk and Santa Anita at 4-1 odds each. No one gave Mine That Bird a chance and yet the horse won against all odds. So, you may be wondering, what does a horse race have in common with investing? You have the same odds at picking a 50-1 underdog correctly as picking a dominant stock! Since 1926, 2% of public companies have created 78% of the stock’s market value as of December 2022. This is why we invest in the entire stock market because being right is hard.
