However, in the feedback I received from all of them, they always mentioned my lack of work experience. I would like to ask senior environmental health officers/housing officers, how can we gain experience? What should we do? I have got a gist for you 😊, We wore our Environmental Health Officer's uniform today for the first time to lectures. Our lecturer said to us "Now you all had an identity, to prove to other departments that you are different''. I smiled and repeated the word "IDENTITY'' And that's the perfect word, the reason why eagles don't mingle with other birds is because they know their identity, they know that surely Eagles are not meant to be seen on the ground playing with a hen 🐔 because it's a shame to their identity. Knowing who they are, they soar 🦅 higher with their strength. Having given my self this perfect example, I know who I am. I am an Environmental Health Officer in training. I'm under the preventive Medicine, My task is to ensure that the environment is safe for the masses by reducing/eliminating the amount of hazardous substances in the environment thereby preventing injuries, sickness, accidents and premature diseases. I know too well that I have to mingle with people a lot due to my profession, so that I will be able to educate them on the unhealthy behaviors they exhibit and ways whereby they can change. Therefore, I have to build myself socially in order to be able to interact with any class of a person. I also know that my profession has to do with a lot of research works as well, therefore I got to learn on how to make good research in order to arrive at a better result. I know quite well that as an Environmental Health Officer, I have to lead by example. When I tell someone to stay in a clean environment, do not litter the surrounding and reduce pollution of any sorts, I'm mandated to practice such habits so that the Enlightenment can be effective. On 22nd May 2024, NEMA Directorate of Environmental Enforcement steered a crucial regular monthly meeting for peer enforcement officers drawn from NEMA field Offices, County Environment Departments and other lead agencies that do environmental enforcement. Over 100 participants attended and it was encouraging to note how we face similar challenges during environmental enforcement. This initiative enables enforcement officers to meet every month and brainstorm on how to deal with environmental incidents that confront Kenyan citizens on daily basis. During the meeting, we normally share monthly national statistics of reported environmental incidents to explore the types, distribution and action taken to close the reported incidents. During this week’s meeting, members appreciated that some incidents take longer to resolve and require multi-agency approach. For instance some incidents involving quarrying activities are for land with ownership issues and hence no enforcement action could succeed without involvement of Ministry of Land or even the National Land Commission. We are committed to strengthening collaboration through the multi-agency approach to resolve Kenya’s environmental challenges. Multi-agency teams are established as need arises at national and county level and can enhance synergy and coordination in addressing the environmental incidents. One News covered the Taranaki Regional Council committee meeting last week where they discussed the implications of a change in national direction for their freshwater planning process. The challenges we are facing around water quality are complex, and require hard conversations with communities. If we are going to make progress, we are going to have to accept that the status quo isn't good enough and get some meaningful change underway. All regional councils need to be ensuring that they are communicating the state of water quality clearly to their communities so that informed conversation and robust debate can occur about what we do next.
