Embracing Second Chances: Overcoming Opposition to Reentry In discussions about second chance reentry after incarceration, it's crucial to foster understanding and share insights. Here are three key points I believe one should remember when engaging with those who may be against the idea: Rehabilitation and Redemption: Highlight success stories of individuals who've successfully reintegrated into society after incarceration. Programs focusing on skill development, education, and mental health support showcase the transformative power of second chances. Reducing Recidivism: Emphasize the role of reentry programs in reducing recidivism rates. Access to education, employment, and support systems can break the cycle of incarceration, leading to safer communities and positive societal contributions. Social and Economic Benefits: Showcase the broader benefits of second chance reentry. Individuals given opportunities to rebuild their lives become taxpayers, employees, and active community members. This not only empowers them but also strengthens our communities. Let's engage in conversations that promote empathy, understanding, and the positive impact of second chances. Together, we can contribute to building a more inclusive and compassionate society. I strongly advocate for the opportunity to be invited to speak at your university, jail, prison or program as my lived experience as one who served 33 years off a 40 year to life prison sentence in California and now 2x author can be an impactful opportunity to create understanding and change as so I look forward to your invitations. #SecondChances #Reentry #CriminalJusticeReform #EmpathyInAction #ChangingLivesForever #SupportTheCause #QualityOfLife #PositiveChange #MakeADifference #Inspiration #TransformativeJourney #HumanityFirst #CriminalJusticeReform #HealingTogether #IncarcerationTransformation #CollectiveImpact #EqualityForAll #Reform #SecondChance #Inclusion #Humanity, #Podcasters, #SanFrancisco, #Government, #News, Michael Vuong, Kenny Robinson, Lester Young, Quil Thomas, Christopher Poulos, Julio Santos, Nathaniel Evens, Seth Steward, Logan McDonnell, Oswald Newbold, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Obama Foundation, David Garlock, The Rockefeller Foundation, Larry Lee, Shawn Wright, Steven Matthew Clark, Dr. Craig Waleed, Aseel Fara, Phillip Alvin Jones, Jon Henry, Prtick Graham, Jay Sutter, Cierra Cobb, Fernando Pujals, Antwan Carter, Levar Burton, Bill Hobbs, Mike Curry, Darius Coleman, Jason C. It takes time to adjust to life on the outside after years of incarceration. This is an incredibly important concept to remember when we are embarking on re-entry to our communities. The relationships that justice-impacted men and women had with loved ones prior to incarceration are impacted by prolonged periods of separation. Just as we have changed during our imprisonment, they have changed as well. Sometimes, it is difficult to know who we can lean on for support. This is why our re-entry program begins on day one of incarceration, and is tailored to the unique demographic of justice-impacted individuals. #phillipajonesconsultingllc

Yesterday, I had a conversation that reminded me of the power of our mission at Threat to Thriving Inc. I was offered a seat at a table by someone kind and friendly. However, the discussion took a turn when she mentioned, “The people you want to help don’t want to help themselves.” This statement, often heard, could have been a deterrent. In fact, years ago, it nearly led me to shut down my entire operation. Such views are not uncommon but highlight a widespread misconception about incarceration and reentry. Our vision at Threat to Thriving is clear: we see a world where committed individuals, once incarcerated, receive the support they need to reintegrate successfully. We advocate for accessible housing, mental health care, financial guidance, and legal assistance, and we push for policies that facilitate these resources. The challenge is significant, not because the individuals we help lack the desire to improve their lives, but because societal perceptions continue to create barriers. The stigma attached to incarceration can overshadow the potential and readiness of individuals to change their paths. Each day, we strive to dismantle these misconceptions through education, direct support, and advocacy. We believe in a community that uplifts everyone, where a past mistake does not define one’s future. Join us in this vision. Support our mission to transform lives and strengthen communities. Together, we can create a society that values transformation and offers real second chances. #SocialJustice #Reentry #IncarcerationReform #CommunitySupport #ThreatToThriving

Second Chance Month was first recognized in 2017 as an opportunity to assist individuals, communities, and organizations across the United States in seeing the importance of supporting safe and successful reentry. This April, Goodwill celebrates Second Chance Month and the importance of giving individuals the tools and support they need to reintegrate into society successfully. Did you know? According to Prison Fellowship, approximately 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. has a criminal record. Goodwill's Reintegration Department provides support to individuals who are reentering their communities after incarceration to find employment, education, housing, and more. Mike Olack, Director of Reintegration, says, "95% of all incarcerated individuals will eventually be released. We at Goodwill SWPA, take our personal and societal responsibility to assist these individuals’ reentry into society seriously. Assisting reentrants with resources such as basic life needs, housing, case management, education, training, employment, and family services allows them an honest opportunity to successfully reintegrate with their families, communities, and society." As an organization that strives to empower people, Goodwill aims to make our programs and services accessible to individuals reentering society. Whether they need a GED, a place to stay, parenting support, help with paying bills, or a job, Goodwill is able to open the door to support and equitable opportunities. When we can support and empower someone who is justice-involved, we also positively impact their support system and the communities where they live.
