In intense and prolonged communications situations, fight the fatigue that can lead to #vanitycomments I grew up in the Philly area and have great fondness for the people and the region. There's no doubt in my mind that dedicated public servants are doing their best to bring a very dangerous fugitive back into custody. And, they are probably quite tired at this point. For all of us leaders and communicators who will find ourselves in similar intense communications situations, there is a lesson to be learned in comments made at a presser that aired on Sunday. One of the spokespersons was asked how they were doing, how their morale was holding up. His reply focused on how often he has been in this situation before and brought it to a resolution. I respect the urge to project experience, confidence and optimism. But sometimes in the moment, when we're tired and the stakes are so high, we're not always thinking ahead of our words and decisions, and their impact on our important stakeholders. There are two pieces of advice I would provide to strengthen the positive impact on stakeholders in the moment the spokesperson responded to the question. 1. For the media stakeholder: truly listen to the question and, in this case, answer the question directly and match the tone. It's easy in a press conference to fall into justification mode. But the media is a stakeholder and it's important to truly listen to the question, from your point of view and theirs, and keep in mind that not every question is a gotcha. I heard sincere compassion in the question. My armchair quarterback advice is to start by saying thank you for the question - acknowledge the compassion. Then I'd answer the question directly about morale. It's not a state secret how teams are feeling. Especially when this is paired with the next bit of advice. 2. For the community stakeholders: keep the messages squarely focused on what you need them to feel, think or do rather than responding with I. Even a well-intentioned "I" response can be a misstep. Instead of conveying experience and confidence, the comment the spokesperson made may lead audiences to believe dangerous fugitives are loose in Chester County a lot. It can be a #vanitycomment taken the wrong way and feed fear not provide comfort to scared citizens. It feels good to the stakeholder, but maybe not so much to the stakeholders. Instead, a simple clear message that the team is experienced and committed to public safety would have far greater positive impact. https://lnkd.in/gHgxfwf9

Wondering what’s going on at Toronto Police Service? Here’s a good place to stay up to date. There are a lot of great things happening that don’t make main stream media. As a security professional, I follow Corporate Communications and divisional news releases in my neighbourhood, along with the divisions where RBG SECURITY INC’s stakeholders are located. Very good ways to stay up to date, share information, and celebrate the great job our police service does. News releases can be found here along with all other Corporate Communications info. #torontopolice #partnership #partnershipmatters #informationsharing #findoutmore #news #newsrelease #securityprofessionals #securityservices

Just a note to mention why I thought this discussion was incredibly timely and necessary: 1.) Our criminal Just-Is system has mandatory minimums but no mandatory maximums to safeguard against the miscarriage of justice 2.) The Board of Prison Terms operates with little to no accountability and hides behind the shroud of "penological interests." It is the only system I know that still produces legal transcripts, in the digital age where what the commissioners say comes out as "inaudible" but we accept as an accurate record. 3.) The California parole process has multiple levels of review to make sure someone doesn't get out, but no review or oversight to make sure no one stays in longer than they should. 4.) Too many people wither away in prison because there hasn't been enough exposure to the antiquated approaches that led to mass incarceration with no increase in public safety This story is a great illustration of what happens to us as a society when we're focused on making a point about crime instead of trying to make a difference in our communities. The CEO of Woolworths in Australia Brad Banducci has landed himself in a media storm. (Edit - Woolworths SA has no association with Woolworths Australia for those who may be concerned). Banducci has been threatened with six months in jail and a contempt charge for failing to answer questions in a Senate hearing. Australia’s big supermarket chains are facing claims they price gouge shoppers and coerce suppliers. Banducci was asked by the Senate committee last week to disclose the company’s return on equity (ROE) and he repeatedly declined to answer the question. In February, Banducci resigned from his role as CEO after a "car crash" interview with ABC's Four Corners. The video went viral of Banducci walking out of the interview with reporter Angus Grigg. You can watch that here: https://lnkd.in/dnPXjAHX There are some crucial lessons in this crisis that I teach in my media training sessions with corporate executives. - Always answer the question before 'bridging' to your key messages. Don't be evasive or avoid the question. - Never go "off the record" in an interview. - Make decisions you can defend. - Be human and empathetic. - Don't try and hide the truth. It will catch up with you. - Never turn a friendly interview into a hostile interview. Even the best CEOs need regular media training refreshers or they become complacent and arrogant. This is a great example of how a media crisis can cost you your reputation and your job. #MediaTraining #CrisisComms https://lnkd.in/dxGaEHma
