The unsung heroes of global healthcare are the FAMILY CAREGIVERS who provide INFORMAL and UNPAID assistance to individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities. 🤝 Their unwavering commitment to loved ones often goes unnoticed, yet THEIR IMPACT IS IMMEASURABLE 🌐 A recent study by Rebecca E Lacey and colleagues (THE LANCET, link in comments🧑🏻💻) shines a light on the profound impact of family caregiving on the MENTAL and PHYSICAL HEALTH of caregivers 🧠 Their research, unique in its focus on age-diverse caregiving, reveals that transitions to caregiving result in significant increases in PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS, particularly among caregivers under 50 years old. 🔄 The study emphasizes the lasting effects of this distress, highlighting the POTENTIAL INTERFERENCE WITH SOCIAL ROLES like partnerships, parenting, education, and employment 😔 Caregiving, despite its stressors, has been associated with psychological benefits, challenging the notion that it uniformly leads to declines in health 🌿 Lacey and colleagues stress the importance of RECOGNIZING and SUPPORTING caregivers in healthcare, including primary care and hospital discharge. They advocate for person-centered and family-centered care across all health settings, emphasizing the need for INCLUSIVE POLICIES in employment, paid leave, and long-term care services 🤗 As we address the challenges of an AGING POPULATION, it's crucial to understand that caregiving impacts individuals across the lifespan 👩⚕️ Moreover, the gender equity aspect cannot be ignored, as women, more likely to become caregivers, face higher risks of negative health outcomes and related economic effects without proper support. Let's RECOGNIZE, HONOR and SUPPORT the invaluable contributions of family caregivers and acknowledge their immense sacrifices. 🤲 Their dedication to the well-being of their loved ones is truly inspiring 🎖️🥇 #Caregiving #GlobalHealth #FamilyCaregivers #MentalHealth #GenderEquity #HealthcareSupport

Today's fourth and final webinar hosted by the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence on "Work and Education" shed light on the significant challenges faced by caregivers of seniors and people with disabilities. Challenges Identified: > Lack of support for self-employed family caregivers > Current EI programs don’t address the episodic nature of caregiving > Need for benefits similar to those offered for maternity and paternity leave > Women in their 50s, often "sandwich caregivers," are disproportionately affected > Home Care Professionals are a more cost-effective solution compared to funding full-time staff for care James Janeiro from the CCCE webinar rightly said, "If you invest in caregivers and care providers, we are all better off." At Gravitii.care, we know how tough it can be for family caregivers to juggle work, school, and caregiving responsibilities. Especially for self-employed caregivers or those working in the private sector, the support just isn’t there. That’s where we come in. Our platform provides the flexibility and respite caregivers need, allowing them to keep their jobs and manage their lives without the constant worry of losing income. By 2050, the demand for elderly care will rise significantly due to global aging. Without redistribution of caregiving duties, women will still spend 2.3 more hours daily on unpaid care work, hindering their ability to pursue education, enter the workforce, or advance their careers. This burden disproportionately falls on women and girls because traditionally they take on tasks like cooking, cleaning, childcare, and eldercare, which in turn limits their economic opportunities. When caregivers share the load, women can enter the workforce, start businesses, and contribute more fully to their families, communities and economies. With a dramatically increasing number of Americans over 65 projected over the next 25 years, we need to be thinking now about mitigating the impact of caregiving responsibilities to society in general and the labor market more specifically. In order to do so effectively, we need to understand the current impacts of caregiving. This study from the National Bureau of Economic Research offers further insight. From the study: "The authors conclude, “We hypothesize that for potential caregivers with the strongest labor force attachment (men and highly educated women), family health needs interact with and exacerbate planned or unplanned interruptions in employment or earnings trajectories. This suggests that family caregiving needs, which will only increase in the future, have the potential to turn temporary labor market shocks into long term exit from the labor force.”" #talent #workforceplanning #worklifebalance #caregiversupport

Supporting Caregivers this Women's History Month New data from the Commonwealth Fund’s 2023 International Health Policy Survey shows that caregiving disproportionately impacts women worldwide. Many juggle intense care responsibilities alongside demanding careers, often at cost to their health, income potential, and retirement security over time. As leaders, we must acknowledge realities caregivers face and support their wellbeing. Considering 75-80% of caregivers are also full or part-time employees, supporting their mental health makes good business sense too. Caregiving strains correlate with higher absenteeism and reduced productivity over time. By integrating Libbie Health's app and programming into your benefits strategy, you demonstrate caring for the whole individual. Flexible policies accommodate unpredictable care needs. Our clinically-backed resources effectively support caregivers where they are. Let's work to lighten the load through practical action and advocacy. #caregiversupport #womenshistorymonth #caregivers #caregiving #mentalhealth #womenshealth #workplacewellness #workplacewellbeing #employeewellness #employeewellbeing #libbiehealth #libbieapp
