Great news! For the second half of 2024, 🌿 Science Based Targets Network has announced that companies will be able to set reduction targets on Nature, aligned with the latest science, and get them validated by an independent third party. Heather Clancy interviewed me alongside Erin Billman in this GreenBiz Group article 📰. In short: - Much of the data collected for climate can be used for nature; the difference lies in the location and contextualization of these activities. - By pinpointing where purchases are made, where commodities are cultivated, and where operations occur, companies can kick-off a thorough assessment of their environmental impacts and dependencies. - Despite their similar names, SBTN operates with a different structure and governance than SBTi, so its credibility should not be judged based on SBTi’s actions or communications. SBTN must continue working with NGOs, researchers, experts and partners like Quantis to ensure targets are scientifically robust and applicable to companies. - Having an independent validation partner is crucial for maintaining the credibility and integrity of the targets. It ensures that the targets are based on rigorous scientific standards and unbiased reviews, fostering trust among stakeholders, investors, and the public. - Interest in nature-based targets is growing among corporations as they recognize the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem services for long-term business sustainability. Since 2022 Klappir has benefited greatly from participating in Nefco - the Nordic Green Bank's Biodiversity Pilot Program. During the program a deeper understanding of #biodiversity data requirements was created with special focus on #ESRS and #CSRD. Last week it was a real privilege to be part of so many forward-looking conversations at #IFscope3EU with experienced and committed practitioners to discuss progress on #naturestrategiesforimpact #EUDR and #regenerativeagriculture thank you Tilmann Silber Karla Canavan Marie-Claire Franzen-Aerts Christopher Stewart Hugo Stuurman @andreeitner Geza Toth, Ph.D. and kudos to team Innovation Forum and @natashabodnar . Too many gems to share here but some of those that have stayed with me: - Growing recognition that becoming net zero is impossible without becoming nature positive. As companies prepare for implementing the EUDR by the end of this year, investing heavily in traceability and re-organising supply-chains and logistics, we must also work hard to guard against unintended consequences. - Companies can lean into driving systems change by better leveraging their multiple spheres of influence: direct operations, supply-chains, landscapes, systems, governance/ transparency. - There is no shame in learning from failure! In fact it is usually the most effective kind of lesson-learning we can do, if we have the humility honesty and courage. - Understanding how National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans aligned with the GBF ladder-up to something meaningful and measurable at the corporate/global level will be essential. - Trade-offs are never a very appealing topic but we must get real about the challenges especially in the short-term, and how in the longer term regen ag is essential for both mitigation and adaptation #naturepositiveagriculture

The World Economic Forum has announced the creation of a "Biodiversity Credit Buyers Club" (https://lnkd.in/ex-PFe6E), to connect leading companies with a robust #naturepositive strategy, with projects aimed at #ecosystemrestoration and #biodiversity uplift and conservation. This initiative recognises how asset managers and other capital providers are increasingly giving importance to biodiversity in their investment strategies, and developing metrics to assess corporate impacts on biodiversity. This signifies a significant shift towards considering environmental responsibility as a critical factor in investment decisions, in line with the guidelines given by the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) #tnfd The #wef and McKinsey & Company , coauthors of the "Biodiversity Credits: Demand Drivers and Guidance on Early Use" white-paper below and the "Demand Analysis and Market Outlook" insight report (https://lnkd.in/e5pDQ5Rt), also predict the global demand for biodiversity credits could reach approximately $2 billion by 2030 and $69 billion by 2050.
