Whoever becomes the next President in Iceland, a role that is not political in Iceland, the early results are worth celebrating with 3 women leading the race. Three intelligent and savvy women in the lead who have already been prominent leaders in business, politics, sustainability, and academia before running for office. What does this tell us? Iceland is a progressive society where women in leadership are the norm. They are role models for young girls and game changers in a world that still has predominantly male leaders. Their confidence and faith in themselves as leaders comes from growing up with the first demographically elected female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, who made it perfectly normal for a single mom to lead as a president of a nation when she won the presidential election in 1980. From my infancy to teenagehood, #VigdisFinnbogadottir drastically changed how women are recieved as leaders in Icelandic society. She changed the way a woman in leadership is perceived and lasted 16 years in office. Icelandic society is not perfect and there is a long way to go still to achieve a full-scale equality. But seeing women dominating the presidential race tonight is truly toast-worthy in an age when women worldwide are still held back by patriarchal values that exclude them from participating in global leadership. Every single one of the women running for president is capable and accomplished. They were told they could run for president and they did it with confidence. Today’s workstation: in my garden, in front of my mum’s golden wattle 🌾   Fun (and really appropriate for this day) fact: this plant - known as mimosa - is the symbol of International Women’s Day here in Italy ♀. This tradition dates back to 1946, when Rita Montagnana and Teresa Mattei – two political activists fighting for women’s equality and members of Unione Donne Italiane (a women’s rights organization) - nominated this bright flower as the symbol of Women’s Day ✨. ❓ But why did they specifically choose the mimosa? For a mix of practical and symbolic reasons: 💛 The mimosa is one of the few plants that bloom in late February/early March, so it’s instinctively associated with this time of the year. 💛 It can be found throughout Italy and it’s inexpensive. 💛 This flower may look fragile but is actually very strong and can survive in harsh conditions – just like women. Iceland, the 1st country where a woman was President. For the next Presidential election, Sigridur Hrund / Victoria is running to be a candidate of Presidence. Diversity is real important and citizens should have the opportunity to vote for candidates with different backrgound. Sigridur Hrund / Victoria comes from professional side: she is an investor and the former chair of FKA. She makes a lot for economical independance, for sustainability and women's empowerment. She needs to receive 1,500 recommendations to be an official candidates. The Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of Principles offering guidance to business on how to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace and community. Established by United Nations Global Compact and UN Women, the WEPs are informed by international labour and human rights standards and grounded in the recognition that businesses have a stake in, and a responsibility for, gender equality and women’s empowerment. WEPs are a primary vehicle for corporate delivery on gender equality dimensions of the 2030 agenda and the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) Goals. By joining the WEPs community, the CEO signals commitment to this agenda at the highest levels of the company and to work collaboratively in multi stakeholder networks to foster business practices that empower women. These include equal pay for work of equal value, gender-responsive supply chain practices and zero tolerance against sexual harassment in the workplace. Here in Aotearoa New Zealand, a coalition of 4 organisations have come together to create impact for WEP's and I am proud to represent United Nations Women Aotearoa New Zealand in this coalition to advance gender equality in the workplace and change the dynamics particularly in stagnant, traditional and arcadic systems to ensure women are heard, seen, valued, represented and contributing in a meaningful way to the future of meaningful mahi in Aotearoa. In 1980, #Iceland made history by electing the world's first female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, a trailblazer who not only shattered glass ceilings but also reshaped our perception of leadership. As a young girl in Iceland, it was normal for me to see women in the highest office. Today, as Iceland elects its 7th president with three women leading the polls, this norm has only strengthened. But the journey is far from being smooth for women globally. The confidence gap remains a significant barrier, not due to a lack of competence but due to a lack of self-assurance. This phenomenon, observed by leaders like Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information, Josephine Teo, underscores a deeper issue: the representation gap. In industries where leadership is predominantly male, women often lack visible role models and mentors who can validate their aspirations and experiences. This can lead to feelings of isolation and impostor syndrome, which deter talented women from stepping into roles they are more than qualified to hold. How do we bridge this gap? It starts with visibility and advocacy. Women in leadership must continue to make their voices heard, increase their visibility, and actively mentor the next generation. Azerbaijan has gone down in history as one of the first Muslim-majority countries to grant women the right to vote and be elected. Azerbaijani women were provided equal voting rights 103 years ago, on July 21, 1919. Azerbaijan became the first secular country in the Muslim East to grant women the right to vote by passing this law. This is also remarkable, given that many European countries had yet to find a solution to this problem at the time. Azerbaijan did it one year before the US, nine years before the UK, 12 years before Spain, 25 years before France, 26 years before Italy, 29 years before Belgium, and 52 years before Switzerland. Let’s honor the legacy of those trailblazing women who defied norms, shattered barriers, and left an indelible mark on history!
