THE CRISIS OF THE ARCHITECTURAL PROFESSION (PART 4) Unlike the other creative industries, architecture is also a liberal profession. This means that it is protected and at the same time limited in its economic ambitions by a deontology that obliges architects to hold the common interest of society higher than any financial interests. Architects are licensed professionals who provide services within the limits of accepted professional norms, governing standards and legislation such as building codes, land use by-laws and similar regulations. In the following chart*, the revenues of liberal professions in Belgium are measured and averaged over three years. The revenues of the architect were 58% of the average revenue of liberal professions. Great legacies endure through remembrance: On this day in 1969, architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe passed away in Chicago, Illinois. Over five decades later, we continue to admire his work and promote the knowledge of his legacy. ✨ In this sense, in addition to preserving and disseminating knowledge about the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, through a variety of cultural and academic activities, promotes the study of the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Lilly Reich and the Modern Movement, as well as debate and awareness of issues related to contemporary architecture and urbanism. Among their key initiatives is the organisation, jointly with the European Commission, of the EUmies Awards, one of the most prestigious of all European architecture prizes. Yesterday, invited by my former student at the School of Architecture and Environmental Studies of Universidad del Diseño, and colleague Vicky Adis, I lectured at the School of Architecture of Universidad Latina. The topic of the talk was "Architecture Here and Now. Theoretical-Critical-Ethical Architectural Thinking," with yet another subtitle: "How should we think and make architecture in Costa Rica?"
