Its Hokey Cokey time in Scotland – with amateur golf’s governing body putting a workforce back in the field, with a return to boots on the ground to help our clubs. Golf is by no means the only industry to tinker with a field force. Large companies often move towards a regional sales force, then revert to centralisation, before ultimately heading back out in to the field again. So hats off to the new regime, and Andrew Baptie at Scottish Golf, for securing the support for a team of 5 Regional Development Officers. But how will success be judged this time ? And more importantly, what exactly do clubs want from this investment ? Clubs have a crucial role to play in identifying the gaps they have in their skillsets, and reaching out for help from their National Governing Body. Its not easy managing a region of over 100 golf clubs, and we have to be realistic about how much time each Development Manager can spend with each club, but lets not waste this opportunity of the support that is clearly out there.  And what about the people who will fill these roles ? There will be some experienced Club Managers out there looking for a new challenge, and I can tell you that moving from the “micro” of club operations to the “macro” of overseeing a region of clubs of varying sizes, is a role I can thoroughly recommend. This is a perfect opportunity to let other clubs benefit from your time behind the wheel, be part of a much larger team and a truly meaningful movement designed specifically to help golf, and our Scottish golf clubs.

Watching Matt Wearn OAM / OLY win gold this week sent me on a trip down memory lane where I managed to find one of the few photos from my sailing career where me and him are in the same frame 😅 But it also got me thinking about the lessons I learnt in sport that apply in sales: 🧠 Invest in mentorship or coaching - whether monetary, time or otherwise, investing in advice from someone who’s been in your position is the best way to fast track your progress, and condense years of experience into actionable tips. 🛠️Continuous improvement- no matter how far along your journey you are, the high achievers are constantly evaluating their performance and looking for areas to improve. 🧭 Follow your own path - looking around you and comparing where you “should be” to the results of your peers will only put unnecessary pressure on yourself. Everyone is on their own journey and results come at different times. 🙌 Surround yourself with your idols - spending time with those you want to be like will naturally pull you towards them. The best athletes are constantly looking for someone better than them to train with and learn from. 💪Stick at it - most people underestimate where they’ll be in 3-5 years time. Many of the sailors at this year’s Olympics are the ones who stuck at it longer than their peers, and constantly improved along the way.

A shout out to my sports network, or indeed any management pals thinking about a move into sport. Are you Scottish Hockey's next CEO? I have been a quiet (!) member of the People Committee for a couple of years for Scottish Hockey and I believe Barry Cawte has done a super job in his relatively short 30 months with us. We always suspected his family in Wales would not keep him here forever, and our loss is CRICKETWALES LIMITED's gain - lucky them come June '24. I'll miss you Big B. He, alongside a well dialled-in staff complement and the Board have stripped back a lot of treacle and firmly launched a quality, tested, clear vision: to Reset, Build, Excel. There is palpable energy and a target to strive for. This is a brilliant opportunity for someone to come in and take this forward and put their own mark in it. Yes it is not London CEO money at £65k but it is Glasgow, so some brilliant schools for kids, and 40% cheaper to live up here. Although I am not asking for a Londoner.
