If you're a public practice accountant this busy season, you're probably wondering when your manager will notice all the hard work you've been putting in. And even if you don’t need that pat on the back, let's talk about a way you're guaranteed to be noticed for all your efforts…   So like many of us in Vancouver this weekend, I took part in the 10km Team Division Sun Run and although the 10km was pretty brutal!   it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be…   You see along the journey there were these people on the sidelines cheering everyone on!   These people were ringing bells shouting, "push through, you're nearly there!" Some even made homemade signs of encouragement that made me giggle, like "don’t chase boys, pass them out!"   so when I did finally cross that finish line I felt such a sense of VICTORY!!   And here's why that matters in the context of busy season… encouragement helps.   BEING SEEN AND SUPPORTED when you are doing your absolute best matters!   And I compare this to the support I see in the environment here at DMCL. We are a mid-size firm that SEES everyone, especially when working as hard as everyone is now during the last hurdle of the season.   There is no one abandoned in a cubby hole somewhere and no one wandering around looking for sign off from a Partner they once saw.   It is because of the mid-size nature of our environment that we can see, notice, encourage and celebrate each other's struggles and successes together.   And although we may work with numbers…no one here at our firm would ever feel like one!   So if you are hoping to be seen, thanked, encouraged during your own journey of fulfilling your career goals - we are a firm you should chat with. Last January I connected with a candidate who wasn't actively looking to leave her current firm. In fact, she was very happy where she was but just wanted to stay aware of what opportunities were available in the market at her level. Given she was very senior, she recognized the opportunities didn't come up as often as other roles. In February, her position was eliminated. I was the first person she called. I took her to lunch to meet her and get a really good understanding of what she would be looking for in her next role. We actively kept in touch but nothing came up at her level for quite some time that fit her needs and checklist for what she wanted in her next position. 5 months later, our client called us about a director level position that checked every single one of her boxes. I called her immediately. One month later, she started in her dream job with a lot more money than she was making in her previous role. Friendly Friday reminder to TRACK YOUR WORK! The best thing you can do to stand apart from other candidates is to objectively quantify your impact. This is especially true for young professionals in the financial space who lack years of experience and/or progressive job titles. Know the scope of your role, the dollars you are in charge of, and other KPIs. Next, clearly articulate the value your ideas, process changes, etc. brought to the organization. Cost and time savings are particularly relevant in accounting.
