Coles Group 🪴Nurture Fund 🪴Round 12. Applications close 23 Feb 2024. Coles launched the $50 million Nurture Fund in 2015 to help Australian producers innovate and grow. Since then, they have offered more than $33 million in financial support to 100 small and medium sized businesses. From carbon neutral bananas, to freezing technology that promises to reduce food waste. Recipients are proof Aussie farmers are leading the charge when it comes to innovation and sustainability. Australian producers can apply for a grant of up to $500,000 to help develop unique products, technologies and processes. Some of the successful applications from WA. 🪴 Walaja Raw Bush Honey - Waterbank, WA. This Indigenous-owned family business was awarded a $330,000 grant to create a new, medicinal grade, premium Melaleuca honey that is sustainably made on Yawuru Country in the West Kimberley region of WA. 🪴 McCormack Farms & Erindoon Beef - Birchmont, WA. This business was awarded a grant of $500,000 to construct a fully covered cattle feeding facility that will create an in-house composting system to reduce methane, nitrogen, and carbon emissions. 🪴 Newton Orchards LLC - Manjimup, WA. Newton Orchards was awarded $250,000 to install large scale netting over its apple trees to reduce waste, improve pome fruit quality, increase water use efficiency and minimise damage from endangered bird species. 🪴 V&G leraci - Brunswick, WA. Miyonga Fresh Greens Ltd is a Kenyan women-owned food processing company that started in 2015. The company produces high-quality dried fruit products using mobile processing units at the farm level. These products, which include fresh, dried, and powdered fruits like mangoes, bananas, and pineapples, are in high demand globally. Miyonga works with 3,600 smallholder farmers in rural Kenya, specifically in Malindi, Taveta, Tana River, and Makueni, helping them connect to large European markets. To further enhance their operations, Miyonga partnered with eProd through the Digitalization Challenge managed by eProd with co-funding from Rabo Foundation. This collaboration has optimized their supply chain management processes, ensuring transparency, accountability, and traceability from farm to market. Through initiatives like establishing a semi-improved coffee nursery and proposing projects for expansion and market creation, the cooperative actively involves over 200 registered farmers, prioritizing youth engagement. Challenges like market infrastructure deficiencies persist, but WDCGCS plans to mitigate them. With ongoing government and funding support, they aspire to establish Wabag coffee as a premium global brand. The race for Food security and sustainability is key. It was a great time with my high school classmate and friend Dr olugbade olaogun at The FMN Group’s Premier Feed Mill’s Ibadan plant. The Agro value chain’s forward integration journey aggregates farm produce (sorghum, barley,maize ,soybeans ) from local farmers, ferried by local truckers, buys from them at great rates, and is used in the production of feedmill. Avocado and kiwifruit grower Liarna White is keen for others to back the continuation of the HortNZ levy, paid by all commercial growers on the sale of New Zealand-grown fruit and vegetables. Liarna says it's important to have HortNZ as a unified voice for the sector, working with growers to break down barriers, helping national and local officials understand the impact of their policies and coming up with solutions. The Community Private Partnership #CPPModel is bearing fruit - The South African Breweries and Moletele community lime farming partnership is a case in point. While limes are grown in South Africa, other citrus fruits are far more profitable. Of the over 90,000 hectares of citrus orchards in the country, less than 10% of the land is dedicated to limes. As a result, consumers either end up paying for expensive imported limes or they substitute them with lemons, which present a vastly different flavour profile. The opportunity, therefore, was to increase local production of limes to ensure that they were available to consumers, and at a lower cost than the imported crop. The solution was a partnership between The South African Breweries, the Moletele Communal Property Association (Moletele Community) and Komati Fruit Group, in an exemplary Community Private Partnership (CPP), to establish and run a farming operation that would ensure reliable local production of limes.
