Here are a few cosmically cool facts you might not know about the National Aeronautics and Space Administration: 1. Firefighting Tech: The fire-resistant suits astronauts wear owe their development to the Apollo 1 fire. NASA needed improved protection, and the result? Spacesuit materials that are also helpful here on Earth! 2. Pool Cleaners in Space? Believe it or not, NASA's water purification systems inspired the creation of automatic pool cleaners! Silver ions used to keep astronauts' water pure turned out to be great for keeping your pool sparkling clean too. 3. Space Age Medicine: Many medical breakthroughs stem from NASA tech. For instance, the development of tiny, programmable pacemakers was influenced by Apollo technology. Pretty amazing, right? Two examples of strategic thinking to face the unknown, inspired by NASA’s Moon Landing mission. 🔹 Approximation and Iterative Approach for Complex Problems: Plotting the perfect trajectory from Earth to the Moon was impossible due to the many variables. Rather than endlessly calculating, NASA adopted an approach of constant correction and adjustments in response to real-time data. 🔹 Contingency Planning and Robust Design to Face Uncertainty: Before lunar landing, scientists speculated about Moon’s surface, from deep dust to hard rocks. To prepare for multiple scenarios, the lunar lander’s legs were equipped with round footpads, allowing them to remain stable whether on solid rock or softer dust. Often, as an engineering leader, you will need to navigate through the unknown. Rather than overthinking the problem, take inspiration from NASA. Use approximation or contingency planning and turn uncertainty into a playground of possibilities. It sounds like a lot more fun than just endlessly waiting for all the answers. 🚀

We are playing a key role in a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration project to grow plants on the Moon. Along with ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space, La Trobe University, USDA, University of Colorado Boulder, and Purdue University, the University of Adelaide will work as part of a consortium to collect plant growth and development data that will help scientists understand the use of plants grown for both human nutrition and life support on the Moon and beyond. The Artemis III mission will include a project called LEAF (Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora) to see how plants respond in lunar environments. People viewing the eclipse from locations where the Moon’s shadow completely covers the Sun – known as the path of totality – will experience a total solar eclipse. Did you know? The first practical fuel cells, now critical components in renewable energy, were developed for NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Johnson Space Center in preparation for the Apollo missions because batteries would have weighed too much. 🆕 Scientists have found intricate features above Jupiter’s famous Great Red Spot! 🔴 Jupiter is known for vibrant displays of northern and southern lights at its polar regions – but the region closer to its equator, which contains the Great Red Spot, was thought to be dull in comparison. 🔴 Thanks to the infrared sensitivity of the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, however, scientists were able to study the region above the Great Red Spot – and found it to be anything but dull! 🔴 They saw intricate structures, including dark arcs and bright spots. They suspect an unknown wave-like mechanism is altering the shape and structure of the upper atmosphere – follow-up observations with Webb could reveal more. 🔴 These findings may also support ESA’s Juice 🛰️ which will observe Jupiter and its three large ocean-bearing moons: Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa. Scientists analyzing lunar soil samples collected by China’s Chang’e-5 rover have discovered traces of water. This finding suggests that water on the Moon exists in more forms than previously thought. Published in Nature Astronomy, the research revealed trace water in the form of hydrated salts on the lunar surface. The Chang’e-5 mission, which returned samples from the Moon’s northern Oceanus Procellarum in 2020, follows NASA’s 2020 discovery of water in sunlit lunar craters.
