Another sign of the shifting power dynamic in the global auto market - Chinese automakers outsold their US counterparts for the first time in 2023.
Chinese brands, led by BYD, sold 13.4 million new vehicles, compared to 11.9 million for American brands such as Ford and Chevrolet. Japanese automakers still hold the top spot, but for how much longer?
Legacy automakers have been caught napping. “Negligence from legacy automakers, which has resulted in consistently high car prices, has inadvertently driven consumers toward more affordable Chinese alternatives.”
The market share of Chinese manufacturers increased the most in the Middle East, Eurasia and Africa, as well as making gains in Europe and Australia. Having seized control of their domestic market, they are now increasingly turning to exports and taking on the legacy brands.
As demand for electric vehicles increases, with China's dominance in BEVs and PHEVs, we can expect Chinese OEMs to continue to gain market share against the others.
