STOP saying the United States has the highest rates of obesity. Simply not true. According to a 2024 analysis published in The Lancet, Pacific island countries account for nine out of the top ten countries with the highest prevalence of obesity among men and women aged 20 and above. In 2022, American Samoa and Tonga had the highest rates of obesity for women, while American Samoa and Nauru had the highest rates for men. In these countries, more than 60% of the adult population was obese. The South Pacific island nations of Niue and the Cook Islands also had high rates of obesity among children, with more than 30% of girls and boys living with obesity. Here are some of the countries with the highest rates of obesity in 2024: ✅ American Samoa: 70.29% ✅ Nauru: 69.65% ✅ Tokelau: 67.05% ✅ Cook Islands: 66.05% ✅ Niue: 63.71% ✅ Tonga: 63.37% ✅ Tuvalu: 57.73% ✅ Samoa: 52.83% If you think America and Canada has major obesity challenges, we do; however, it’s worst in 20 other countries.

Todays headline around the cost of obesity, features the usual click bait… I have been asked to speak on BBC5Live and LBC radio about this topic today and here are my thoughts… Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, long term health condition. We need to stop thinking that ONE thing is going to be the answer to reducing the rates of obesity, because it’s not. Henry talks about how we should focus on the food environment and how we shouldn’t be focusing on weight loss medications. Now I disagree, we need to focus on BOTH, among other things. Two thirds of the UK population is living with overweight or obesity, so we absolutely need to start looking at how we support and treat people already living with obesity, but I also agree that we need to look at the prevention angle too. We need to look at the food environment, food formulations, access to nutritionally dense foods, education, psychology etc… it is not just about taxing certain foods and that being the answer. We need to look at obesity with a multifaceted lens, because it is a multifaceted complex condition… we also need to remember that at the end of the obesity statistics we so readily talk about are people…. People that need empathy, support and kindness. Obesity is not a choice, so let’s stop blaming the individual and making it all about personal responsibility, because it is more complex than that. #obesity All About Obesity CIC

That is the Obesity rate by country! A couple of interesting things here. 1- The pattern does not look good for Brazil; 2- France and Germany, whatever they're doing, seems to be paying good dividends. 3- The obesity rates in Brazil and Argentina are very similar, a kind of "exponential" increase.

The diabetes rates in the US 'only' place them at 55th in the world! We often hear about the high number of people with diabetes in the US, but they actually 'only' rank 55th, with 10.7% of the population having diabetes [1]. Don't get me wrong - these numbers are high, but it actually looks much worse in other countries. The top 3 countries with the highest diabetes rates include [1]: 1. Pakistan 30.8% 2. Kuwait 24.9% 3. Nauru 23.4% In Europe, we also have room for improvement, with 7.0% of the population affected [2]; however, significantly better than in the US. Good habits are essential for good health, but Romanians still have (a lot of) work to do on this chapter. According to OECD's ”State of Health in the EU: Country Health Profile 2023”, poor diet, tobacco smoking, and alcohol consumption are major contributors to mortality in Romania, with the rates for each risk factor being either similar or significantly higher than the EU averages. For example, Romanian adults smoke at the same rate as their EU counterparts: about one in five were regular smokers in 2019. On the other hand, approximately 35% of Romanians reported heavy drinking at least once per month - nearly double the EU average. Moreover, only 2.4% of Romanian adults consume the recommended five daily servings of fruit and vegetables (the lowest rate in the EU) and only 8% reported engaging in at least 2.5 hours of weekly physical activity (again, the lowest rate among the countries in the European Union). A glimmer of hope? Despite the mentioned risk factors, Romania has the lowest rate of adult obesity - only 10.5% of adults were obese in 2019, compared to an EU average of 16%.
