I first discovered Caux accidentally, when I was researching the movement's involvement in Japan's post-war reconstruction in the 1950s, which impacted a peace treaty with the United States, improving labour-management relations and handling trade frictions. I was struck by the way this organisation was continuing today to gather public and private sector leaders from east and west, to facilitate reconciliation, hand-in-hand with rebuilding a just global economy. I had never heard of such a gathering place, and in truth, to this day have yet to experience anything like it. Caux is a place that bridges not only racial divides, but economic. Rich and poor, young and old, professors and undergraduates gather as one common humanity. It sounds like a dream, I know. It is. Join us this September 8-12. How does the local government sector build momentum in the race to reduce greenhouse gas emissions? Highly recommend you apply if this is a question you're engaged with at all.

Thanks to HKS and Prof. Masoud for sharing. The clips of the discussion from the second week of a October reflect how people around the globe must engage on this issue. I may not be as informed as I should be about what more HKS and other leading academic centers have done since October, but my sense is not enough. There must be ongoing, continuous, civil, honest, direct and most importantly well lead conversations among folks with all different points of view on the situation/war/ conflict involving Israel and the Palestinians. Leaders from the Business world, current political leaders, and representatives of citizens with different points of view must be engaged in these discussions as well as leaders of academia and their students. As Ambassador Djerejian suggested, their is a critical deficit of Political Leadership in the Middle East and around the world at this time so gatherings like the ones HKS is hosting must be ongoing and including ever more participants. Peace is possible in the Middle East and Ukraine but not probable until much more engagement is undertaken like that which HKS started in October.

In either case, their role in spreading American values spurs debate. Are these institutions symbols of American imperialism or a benign way for the United States to engage the world?
