Most of you know that I volunteer as the Vice Chair of the Board for the Horizons at The Foote School program in New Haven, CT which is an immersive academic and enrichment program serving over 160 New Haven Public Students (grades K-8 with a newer High School Mentorship Program to reach the 9-12 kiddos as well) each year with year-round programming that is anchored around its robust summer component. We are a largely privately funded program that provides this opportunity free of charge to families and if you are looking for ways to help advance equity in education, see our support page for ways you can help us with our work: https://lnkd.in/eFskdnb7 Today, I had the privilege of not only presenting but seeing the fruits of my organizing a special panel of friends for our “Career Day Chat” for the middle school class. With the help of my friends Elijah Hampton, James Williams, Willie Henriquez, and Jordan Blatche, among the five of us, we presented a multifaceted group of professionals who are business owners, musicians, real estate investors, accountants, serial entrepreneurs, correctional officers, and attorneys for career day. These gentlemen showed up in such a real way and listening to them speak I only became more inspired and grateful to have these guys in my circle. The tough middle school crowd loved them as we shared jokes and laughs and thoughtful and engaging follow-up questions. Such a special moment was shared today, and I’m just moved to have been able to witness it. So much was talked about but some of the messages we shared were: - “You are only as good as the company you keep.” - “Model what you need.” - “Mistakes will happen, but do your best to not make the mistakes that you can’t make a comeback from.” - “Ask for help and seek mentorship.” - “Make a covenant to be the best version of yourself that you can be.” - “There is more than one way to be successful. With that, school may not be the path for you, but all of us need to develop a game plan for success.” - “Shutup and work – not everything you must do you will like.” #TeamDestined4Greatness 🙌🏾

Meet one of our Commencement Student Speakers, Angela Scott! As we celebrate our graduates this week, we're thrilled to spotlight one of our inspiring student speakers whose journey through the Master of Public Administration program at CLU has been nothing short of remarkable. "Growing up, I realized the disparities in education and opportunities depending on where one lived. This sparked a desire in me to make the world a better place. My decision to pursue an MPA came after learning about the impact of Public Administration on community development. I chose this field to address these disparities and contribute to a fairer society." On why she chose CLU: "I was referred to CLU by a mentor, Anne Turner, who praised the school's outstanding curriculum and affordability. Her guidance was instrumental in my decision to join this community." About CLU's Online Learning Experience: "Joining an online program, I was skeptical about the lack of face-to-face interaction. However, CLU's engaging curriculum and the insightful feedback from professors fostered a strong sense of connection and involvement, dispelling all my reservations." For Angela's Capstone project, she explored "Reimagining Reentry: The Potential Impact of a Comprehensive Release Package for Newly Released Inmates," aiming to create meaningful change in post-incarceration processes. In nearly 20 years - I’ve personally worked in schools in Pittsburgh, Chicago (city and suburbs), San Francisco, and the North Bay of San Francisco. One thing is consistently true - our schools are systemically and historically segregated - racially and socio-economically. Overwhelmingly, Black and Latino/a students attend schools that abhorrently under-resourced in every aspect - staffing, educational resources, enrichment opportunities, safety, and basic best practices. Meanwhile, their predominantly white peers at neighboring school districts benefit, learn, and grow with ample opportunities and resources (and of course funding from various sources including active parent associations filling the gaps). I’ve dedicated the majority of my work to bridging access to the arts and creativity for systemically marginalized communities — here is the part where I tell you all the data that points to the arts as a catalyst for increasing student opportunity and potential —— I believe that AND it’s not enough. Our SYSTEMS need significant and sweeping change. 70 years since #BrownvsBoardofEducation…but our education and socioeconomic policies continue to uphold systems that are hurting families and students. This OpEd resonated with my tired arts advocate heart. Our work helps - but we are swimming against currents and tides that need more sweeping change in direction. If you’re out there - and work in this space - let’s keep working toward sweeping change. I believe it can happen. #education #hope #artseducation

This ruling not only marked a significant victory in the fight for civil rights but also emphasized the critical role of policies in promoting diversity, equity, and accessibility in education. As we honor this monumental achievement, it's crucial to recognize the ongoing efforts of organizations and movements dedicated to advocating for inclusive education policies. These advocates are at the forefront of ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, receives a supportive and empowering learning environment. True change requires the collective action of our community. It's forged by those who advocate for inclusivity, engage in meaningful dialogue, and support initiatives aimed at dismantling barriers to equitable education. In the spirit of Brown v. Board, I urge us all to come together to champion the cause of inclusive education. By amplifying our voices and supporting policies that foster an equitable learning environment, we honor the legacy of this historic decision and contribute to building a more inclusive future.
