In #strategicdoing, we talk about #networks being formed around a hub of some kind. This is a very interesting example: a network forming around a piece of public art (and of course the ideas behind that). What other unusual "hubs" have you encountered?

Reflecting on New Profit's 25th and America Forward's 15th Anniversary Luncheon, a common thread wove throughout the event: Ideas that bridge divides and foster democracy can start anywhere, even on the back of a napkin, as Vanessa Kirsch shared with the origin story of New Profit 💡 Former Governor of Massachusetts Deval Patrick underscored the need for collaborative bridge-building—a foundation for preserving democratic values we cherish. Voices like David B. Wilkinson, Alise Marshall, and Maria Kim spoke to the strides and future of social innovation, while Dr. Raj Chetty dove into the mechanisms driving opportunity and effective change levers. Rounding out the event, Mark Suzman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation shared an evolved approach, shifting from a stance of impatient optimism to one of patient urgency—a sentiment that resonates deeply as we navigate the complexities of societal change. Purpose. It’s something I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about over the past year in particular. Last week I attended a session hosted by Nonprofit Quarterly and featuring Tara Andrews Huffman, JD, Monika Kalra Varma, and Ginger Naylor. Tara and Monika spoke about the four principles of Purpose Driven Board Leadership, as defined by BoardSource. https://lnkd.in/gBciAZ7A They really got me with the Purpose Before Organization principle, which speaks to prioritizing the organization's purpose, versus the organization itself. As the new board treasurer of Joel Hall Dancers and Center, I realize I need to shift some of my thinking about my role. I'm super focused on the sustainability and longevity of the organization itself, but likely need to step back and consider community needs and voices, and how I can be accountable to them. How can my own purpose align with advancing the organization's purpose? How does our organizational strategy advance our collective purpose? The other principles are: Respect for Ecosystem, Equity Mindset, and Authorized Voice and Power. I’d love to hear other thoughts on these ideas!

In 2024 Capital Collaborative will launch a cohort designed explicitly for board members, trustees, and wealth-holders who want to discover ways to cede their power and create space for new forms of governance to flourish. Participants will be in the safety of a peer cohort, have space to redefine their roles, and support to formulate a transition plan for letting go of power and leaving a metamorphic legacy. Metamorphic legacy is a beautiful, wise, intelligent form of stewardship. It knows its unvarnished history, feels the present weight of opportunity, and courageously faces a future it won’t control. It embraces change, complexity, and collective design. It recognizes that qualifications and expertise for philanthropic governance are not determined by proximity to wealth but proximity to community, directly relevant diverse types of knowledge or experience, and multifaceted understanding of the systems that hold problems in place.
