Sustainable aviation fuels made from biomass are a solution that is scaling up around the world. Aviation produced 2.4 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2018. Put another way, if aviation were a country it would have been the sixth largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world according to rankings in 2019. The US Department of Energy issued a multi-agency Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge in 2022 that plans to accelerate research and development, with the goal of producing 35 billion gallons per year by 2050. The UK-based Firefly Green Fuels is developing sustainable aviation fuel made from fecal sludge. Ecological Transition 🌱 | #GEODIS is taking a new step towards decarbonizing its french fleet with the ongoing deployment of 31 electric tractors and 7 carriers, supported by ADEME. 🚚 This action continues our #transition to vehicles and alternative modes using decarbonized or #biosourced energies (electric hybrids, natural gas, biogas, and B100) and the installation of suitable refueling and recharging infrastructure. It contributes to GEODIS' commitments to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 42% (scopes 1&2) and a 30% decrease in the carbon intensity of subcontracted transportation (scope 3) by 2030 compared to the 2022 reference year.

We’re excited to announce a new partnership with Wagner Sustainable Fuels and LanzaTech in Australia, leveraging our CirculAir™ technology process—an end-to-end solution developed by LanzaJet and LanzaTech. This project will equip Wagner’s Brisbane SAF Refinery with the capability to convert waste-based feedstocks, such as industrial waste, into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF), helping to decarbonize the aviation industry.    Supported by investments from Boeing and the Queensland Government, this project will create jobs in Queensland, enhance Australia’s energy security, and contribute to global efforts to reduce aviation emissions.    By combining LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology with LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet process, CirculAir provides a flexible and scalable solution to produce SAF from locally sourced waste feedstocks. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) provides a significant opportunity to decarbonize the aviation industry as demand for air travel continues to grow. SAF is a low-carbon alternative to conventional jet fuel, produced from renewable and sustainable sources including biomass, waste, or recycled carbon and renewable energy. It has direct air quality benefits at airports where it is used, supports regional economic development, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) at the global scale.   In a recent analysis, developed in collaboration with San Francisco International Airport for AAAE, we highlight how airports can leverage SAFs in the American market.    “Sustainable aviation fuel will be the backbone for decarbonizing the aviation sector," says Raphael Sperry who led the analysis. LanzaTech Global and LanzaJet have announced a new collaboration with Wagner Sustainable Fuels to explore equipping the Brisbane SAF Refinery with their CirculAir platform. This joint technology solution transforms waste carbon and renewable power into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), advancing Australia’s leadership in sustainable fuels. The CirculAir platform uses carbon recycling technology to convert local waste streams, such as industrial emissions and municipal solid waste, into ethanol, which is then converted into SAF using LanzaJet’s alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) technology. This project not only enhances Australia’s domestic SAF production but also supports the country’s energy security and environmental protection efforts. The Brisbane project has gained commercial support from LanzaTech and LanzaJet, along with financial investments from The Boeing Company and the Queensland Government. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has announced the nation will partner with China to innovate sustainable aviation fuels. Over the next two years, the collaboration will see experts from the University of South Australia (UniSA) work with their Chinese counterparts to develop sustainable aviation biofuel industries in both countries.
