Creating a truly inclusive culture takes intentional, sustained leadership. Like a garden, a healthy organizational culture takes cultivation and nurturing in response to changing seasons, weather and other conditions. Policies and training are important, but setting a personal example of inclusive behaviors is paramount. People tend to look around at others and conform their behavior to group norms. They look for “social proof” that they are doing the right thing. Formal and informal leaders can intentionally create social proof to reinforce inclusion and belonging. In Afghanistan a Navy Chief Petty Officer was given a run around when the command in which she worked was deactivated. She was bounced around between different units before we got the opportunity to take her on board and she was quite disgruntled by the time she showed up to CJTF-76. Our leader, Lieutenant Colonel Emma Colson, insisted that the new member of our staff be given clear responsibilities commensurate with her rank, experience and leadership abilities. Our sergeant major had his sergeants make sure she had quarters, desk space, computers, badges, etc. We gave her tours of Bagram Air Base, oriented her to our mission and made sure she was set up for success on the job. Additionally, we welcomed her as a full-fledged member of our team on day one and treated her as if she had deployed with us from Fort Drum. She immediately became an impact player. She took charge, coaching, teaching and mentoring the junior Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, working long hours seven days a week and streamlining operations. Her disgruntlement faded almost immediately, and she could be heard laughing and joking with the other NCOs. She didn’t become an instant success by accident. Our senior leader was very intentional and communicated her intent in no uncertain terms. As Women's History Month comes to a close, it's a profound honor to celebrate their indelible contributions across the vast spectrum of our operations. Women are pivotal figures at every echelon in our ranks—ranging from non-rate positions to O-5 and extending into our dedicated civilian and auxiliary workforce. From the shore to the surface fleet, our planners, logisticians, boarding officers, boat drivers, armory specialists, and engineering teams include women participating, leading, and innovating. Reflecting on our history, the U.S. Coast Guard has been at the forefront of gender integration within the armed forces. Trailblazers like Myrtle Hazard, the first woman to enlist in the Coast Guard in 1918, and the SPARs of World War II set a precedent for inclusion and service. The crew aboard the cutter named for her proudly serves this region. These pioneering efforts continued to evolve, leading to milestones such as the first women serving at sea post-World War II in 1973, the first female aviator in 1977, and the first female commanding officer afloat in the same year. In recent years, the presence of female flag officers up to the three-star rank underscores the ongoing progress and leadership opportunities available. Our journey is not solely about marking firsts. It is fundamentally rooted in continuously cultivating an environment where every member, regardless of gender, feels valued, included, and empowered to make a difference. It is about building upon the legacy of those who came before us, pushing the boundaries of what is possible, and fostering a culture of belonging. As we honor the women who paved the way and those who continue to inspire us, we acknowledge the efforts of our entire team, men and women alike, who strive together toward our shared goals. Our collective dedication, resilience, and camaraderie propel us forward, united in our mission to protect, defend, and save lives. Doesn’t it feel great when someone thanks you for doing a good job? The success of the Dreadnought Alliance will be built on the hard work and dedication of our people. We want a culture that recognises collaboration, innovation and a drive for continuous improvement. More than 30 members of the Alliance Programme Team have already been recognised by Rear Admiral Donald Doull for going above and beyond and making an outstanding contribution to our values and delivery for our customer, the Royal Navy. Recognising when our team members have done something well can help us to create a positive working environment. It improves team morale and motivates our people to be more engaged with the work they’re doing and feel proud that they’re supporting our success. It can also help to build strong working relationships so that people feel comfortable providing open and honest feedback that could help improve the way we work. #CompanyCulture impacts employees A core value of the Air National Guard as a component of the United States Air Force is Service Before Self, and if you had asked me what my values were in my 20s, I would have told you Honor, Duty, and Sacrifice. A company value at Greencastle Consulting is Family Comes First. Recently, I had to decide whether or not an Airman could make up a drill for what he deemed a family matter. In my experience, this would not have been considered a family emergency by the military. I let him make up that drill. During my employment with USAA, I was exposed to Mission Moments, stories of our military women and men, that kicked off each employee meeting. These were always so incredibly touching, and I looked forward to seeing each one, knowing their stories would inspire thought and leave lasting impressions. Seeing Rodney share his mission moment in this video was no different and brought back a flood of memories. Joyful memories. I always appreciated being reminded why I drove through the gate each day, and why our mission mattered. That it was not just a job or means to an end. It was something much bigger. More importantly, though, it inspired a thought today I'd like to share, and especially as an agile coach, resonates so deeply. Thank you for reading. Despite the mission, customer, or industry your organization serves, consider a few minutes to remind employees why they walk through the door each day or click on that zoom link for another meeting. An imperative given the stresses of today. Helping each person understand this "why" is such a small investment to make on a recurring basis. Recurring because there are days employees could use inspiration and motivation. Perhaps they have personal struggles or are so distracted with their latest assignment. Just a little something (authentic) to place wind in their sails, boost productivity, and know the company cares beyond (say) the bottom line or shareholders. As an agile coach attempting to transform how value is delivered, this cannot be truer. Employees require the support of their leadership at all levels to have clarity into why the investment in agile, how will this help them and our customers, and that we are all in this together - learning together - supporting each other. A small gesture that lays a foundation of alignment, encouragement, and safety as they practice. I encourage you to take a moment, reflect and ask yourself - what insights can I provide that inspire my staff, my peers, or my environment to show up and serve others. You never know when they need this reminder that they are contributing and making an impact much bigger than themselves. Enjoy the video. Rodney is obviously a great man doing great things.

I was asked the differences I saw with officer and enlisted in corporate America so here goes a very short list. Out of probably 100 former enlisted, only 1 was a POS. *Great at operations and most I knew were top performers *Ready to lead on day 1 and people are ready to follow *Don't get into the office politics *Promotion ceiling is low because they are honest and direct which is what corporate America calls, lacking soft skills. *Don't put up with stupid Out of probably 20 officers, 3 were sub-standard. *Don't handle the micromanagement engrained in corporate managers very well. *2 sub-standards were heavily involved in office politics, i.e. back stabbers. The 3rd employed all the dirty tactics at his disposal to get promoted and it worked. *Over half were top performers but were fired, quit, or transferred due to inability to adapt to corporate culture.
