IMHO the ability to land in degraded environments is the single biggest improvement towards flight safety. The larger cabin, the more powerful GE engines and the fly by wire flight controls make this aircraft a winner for the Marines.

It is no surprise that transitioning from military service to civilian life can be a daunting journey. As a former member of the Australian Army who voluntarily exited in August 2022, I am compelled to shed light on some of the key experiences I encountered during my transition to the civilian world.   While my account is not exhaustive (sadly so), it underscores the need for enhanced support mechanisms within the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to ensure smoother transitions for all personnel. Here are a couple of highlights from my transition:     1. One of the initial setbacks I encountered was the loss of my appreciation of service certificate, a symbolic recognition of my commitment and contributions. Upon its eventual retrieval after my efforts to track it down, I was dismayed to find that my name had been misspelled — an oversight that reflects a lack of attention to detail within administrative processes.   2. Communication breakdowns further compounded my transition experience. As an example, during a phone conversation, I was instructed to respond to emails post-separation so that my career coach would quote "know I am still alive”— a direction that struck me as both insensitive and trivialising of my departure from military service.   There were many additional compounding events (submitted to the inquiry) which lead to my urgency of seeking help, where I sought solace in the guidance of a psychologist to navigate the emotional toll of my transition. The flight operations restriction for all DoD V-22 Ospreys (including the Navy CMV-22) now appears confirmed, per Military.com reporting. "The services are barred from flying the controversial tiltrotor aircraft more than 30 minutes away from a suitable airfield to divert to in case anything goes wrong." "Cmdr. Beth Teach, a spokesperson for Naval Air Forces, confirmed to Military.com on Thursday that the restriction was handed down by the V-22 Joint Program Office, part of Naval Air Systems Command, and is a requirement that all the services are following." What exactly does this mean for our Osprey fleet? Is this simply a phased return to full operations? Or does this mean a problem has been identified, but not a solution, and the expectation is maintaining 30 minutes from a divert will allow safe recovery in the expected event this same issue returns?
